just like it says. id like to improve my marksmanship, what would be the best reference material for me to read up on? particular author? particular thread, for that matter? i live near augusta, ga if anyone knows of an instructor that isnt too high on price or themselves.

Read the stickies here in the rifle forum first. Get your head wrapped around some of the concepts.

Then get thee to an Appleseed shoot. I enjoy reading, but there really is only so much you can glean from a book about marksmanship. Become acquainted with the fundamentals, sure. But being a good rifle shot (or any other shot for that matter) isn't knowing the fundamentals, it's being able to apply them on a consistent basis.

Did anyone mention Appleseed yet? :D

You didn't state what type of firearm you are trying to train on. I think that would be prudent before we start giving suggestions.

Appleseed is great for .22LR and a few rifle basics, but you'll get no instruction at all with regard to handguns.

The NRA website will direct you to local certified instructors and different courses that are upcoming. They are going to be many different types of discipline. Also I believe they list the instructors fees. If not, a telephone number for the instructor should be provided.

Attending a few Appleseed's is a great start for learning the basics of Rifle Marksmanship.

Given this was posted in rifle country, I'm going to assume OP is looking for rifle marksmanship help. I have two pieces of advice.

1. Buy and read The Art of the Rifle, by Jeff Cooper. Very practical knowledge on shooting a rifle in real world, field conditions.

2. Appleseed events. Can't beat 'em.

Just my $0.02. Worth what ya paid for it.

Lol, good call.

No, a teacher is the best teacher.

Practicing bad habits doesn't help you become a better marksman.

But practicing after you've been taught good habits? Now.. there's something that'll work.

If you are self taught, instruction will take you farther than you ever will on your own. If you've had rudimentary instruction before, real instruction will put you head and shoulders above where you were when you started.

Using myself as an example, I had "instruction" from my Dad and Grandad. I was a decent shot. Then Uncle Sam got hold of me and actually taught me to shoot. Now my Dad thinks I'm some sort of wunderkind with a gun. Reality is I'm what an average shooter with instruction is.

what kind of shooting are you doing?

position smallbore shooting is a great way to learn rifle marksmanship.

smallbore benchrest is a great way to learn how to read the wind and maximize your setup.
