Exactamundo. I've got a Ruger Security Six in .357 and the wife has a S&W M60 in .357. This little Marlin will be a great way to centralize the ammo and provide her a long arm for training and defense.

That's good to know to look into heavier bullets. I already have some Speer Gold Dot 170gr flat points for deer and larger varmints. Hopefully they will group well.

I was hoping that it would like the 125gr JHPs for lighter varmint work though. We'll just have to try em and see.

Thanks!

uh....oops

not quite sure why my post came out in "quadruplicate". NATHANIEL
Not quite wealthy enough to buy 4 of them. Plus the wife sort of frowns
on that kind of thing.:D

For the money, giving up checkering is a no brainer. Giving up walnut is a little more painful for me, but for $300, that's a mighty fine little carbine ya got there. I have the full price 1894CS version with checkered walnut and while I LOVE the walnut, I could do without the checkering. Marlin got it right with the 1894 CBC:

Isn't that straight, uncheckered walnut stock just a thing of beauty?

Having a whole bunch of lever rifles in .357 mag, .44 mag., and .45 Colt, I'd have to say that I much prefer no checkering. First off, I don't feel any need for it. Secondly, I think a clean, straight walnut stock is about as beautiful as you can get... the checkering just mucks it all up in my opinion. If checkering were truly needed on a lever rifle, that would be one thing, but I prefer slim forestocks (ala Winchester) and no checkering.

I do have several more Marlins than I have Winchesters, and they're both great makes of lever rifles. But as time goes on, my preference is shifting from Marlins over to Winchesters. Not because Marlins aren't great rifles, just because I prefer the feel and the look of the Winchesters. That and the fact that the Winchester 92 is the smoothest, quickest, lightest, strongest, most nimble and reliable pistol caliber action a lever rifle ever saw. Yep... the Marlin 1894's are great, the Winchester 94's are wonderful... but the Winchester 92 is something really special. While the Marlins are much easier to break down and clean, but there's just something about that 92 that just can't be touched. John Browning brought us some of the finest firearms ever created.... Win 92, Win 94, 1911 pistol, Hi-Power pistol, just to name a few.
