I've decided to pick up a Marlin 1984 lever in .357 but am having trouble finding one in stock anywhere. I've pretty much ruled out the Cowboy model, and was hoping to find a new 1894C for ~$450. Big 5 Sporting Goods has the Marlins in stock for $465 + tax, but they've got a hardwood stock and I hear the barreling is microgroove, as opposed to Ballard. I don't know much about rifling, but I'm assuming it's a downgrade?

This seems like a steep price for what I have to admit is a pretty drab looking rifle. If the non-walnut was cheaper, I'd buy it, but from what I've read I think I can do better. Does anybody know of reliable online retailers that I could ship to a FFL?

They're ballard-rifled.

And you don't buy anything from Cinco Grande unless it's on sale.

The Marlins go on sale pretty regularly. Mine was $299 a few years ago, I don't know what the sale price is these days.

Great gun. I love mine. The stock's quite plain, but a nice tooled leather buttstock cover with 10 cartridge loops will cover that up nicely. Haven't bought mine yet, but levergunleather.com's gonna get some bread from me soon.

They were just on sale over the weekend. They go on sale every three months or so. They get marked down to $399 for the sale. Just be patient!

Here's how Big 5 works. Their regular prices are bull****. However, just about every item goes on sale for a week, every couple of weeks. So, you always buy stuff that's "on sale" because that's the real price.

My 1894C from Big 5 is perfect. Accurate, great fit and finish, and it cost me $379. I think they may have bumped the "sale" price to $399 recently.

Always check out the gun you will be taking home. Not the type of gun, but THE gun. Take it out of the box and inspect it thoroughly. Doesn't matter if it's an H&R or an H&H.

Buy it when it's $399. That will be next week or the week after.:)
