Hello all- for about 18mos I have been under a Teacher who uses a mixture of diffrent styles to teach self defense with both hand and weapons. Jujitsu ground work, akido stand up joint work and flow, wing chung punches, judo throws, shotokahn strikes, gung foo froms and meridian work, and fencing footwork. We have learned both kife work and weapons defenses. his instructors have been Bobby Stines, Tyrone Shepard, Dan Inosanto, Larry Bostick.

I have said all that to say I am now without a Dojo...Due to contract problems we have had to give up our meeting place for a while. I am looking for something around my area that has similar styles so that I can continue my learning. If anybody is familiar with "The Academy of Martial Arts" and knows of a place in SC where I can get a similair blend of styles, then please help.

You might try the Fitness World in Darlington. My wife took from there several years ago. The style was then Wateroo (sp?). I've considered taking there, but don't have the time right now. I know very little about the martial arts, I was a wrestler, but his style may be along your lines. If it's not, how 'bout open a dojo in Darlington or Florence. I really want to get into it within the next year, as soon as I'm done building my house, and your style sounds like what I'm looking forward. I'll be your first student!

I don't know exactly where in SC you are, but there are SEVERAL great schools in Columbia. I currently study at the Columbia School of Karatedo in West Columbia. I've been there for around 4 years and I study Shintoyoshin Jiu-jitsu. The instructors are great and the curriculum is very comprehensive. I'm ramping up towards my Shodan now.

Other GREAT schools in the Columbia area are The Columbia Martial Arts Training Center (www.cmatc.com) run by Sifu Mark Mills. Absolutely outstanding programs there including Jeet Kun Do, Muy Thai, Kali, and grappling. Sifu Mills is an amazing instructor.

The Palmetto Jiu-jitsu and Healing Academy is another superb school. The school is run by Renshi Tom Ryan and teaches Danzan Ryu Jiu-jitsu. Renshi Ryan is a truly inspired martial artist and his program is first rate.

Hopefully some of this is helpful. Good luck and let me know if you need any additional info.
