I've read somewhere that there is a piece you can purchase to replace the floorplate and spring in a Mauser to a detachable magazine. I think I found one somewhere but couldn't see how it worked or what magazines it took. Not really something too purposeful, but just something cool.

Keep in mind that unlike later actions like the Rem 700 / Sav 110, the 98 Mauser has the feed rails built into the receiver rails and an open top magazine box.

A separate magazine would not really require feed lips, and they would be in the way of normal operation. (unless the receiver rails were modified)
But then, how do you keep the rounds from flying out when you take it out?

I've got one like what NCsmitty linked to that I haven't fired yet, but have run a bunch of snap caps through the action with it. It hasn't hung up yet on those, but haven't tested with live ammunition.

The Germans made a 20 round magazine for the GEW 98 in WWI, there are some 98k rifles that have been fitted with it.

Thanks, I did wonder how the rounds kept from flying out, which is why I opted out of that. Just something cool to check out, if I ever decided to do it.
