Well I was looking at getting one of the yugo made mausers from mitchells mauser's. Does anybody have any experience with that company? Also thought opinions on it?

Vern is being nice.

Woody Justin 42--Mitchell's Mausers is usually described as a complete rip-off. They do pretty up the weapons they sell, but charge sucker-level prices for doing so.

You can get the very same firearms for much less from other vendors. They will be less well de-greased; the stocks will not be sanded nor refinished. But by doing any of that type of work which you care to, you could buy at least twice as many "ordinary" firearms with the same $$.

Lower-priced vendors? J&G Sales, www.jgsales.com Samco Global Arms, www.samcoglobal.com R Guns, www.rguns.net I. O. Inc, www.ioinc.us Sarco, Inc. www.sarcoinc.com and Hunters Lodge Corporation, www.hunterslodge.com all stock various WWII-era milsurp rifles, and ANY of those could beat Mitchell's prices. (This list compiled with one quick page-through of the current issue of Shotgun News. There are plenty of other dealers!)

Of course, if money is no object to you....Well then, heck, it's only money. Few of us are in such a position.

$299 for a rifle you can get for $129. You want someone else to clean it up and reblue for $170 go ahead...your money. I have a "collector grade" K98 from them. Its a Russian Capture K98 that has been cleaned up. I didn't buy from Mitchells though. I did get it for a reasonable price.

I have a Yugo, a Checkoslakian, and a German Mauser.....but not from Mitchell's....they are much cheaper elsewhere....

Yeah, Mitchell's is a big rip. Way overpriced, and not exactly truthfully advertised. Their rifles are not "original K98K's," but are M-48's that have frequently been reworked/reblued. There have also been accusations made that they have "reproofed" (adding collector desirable markings) to rifles to fraudulently increase their value. I bought an M48 a few years ago from somebody else for $100, while Mitchell's was selling them for $300.

Otherwise, Mausers in general are fine rifles. The Mauser design is probably one of the most important evolutionary milestones in firearms history--so much so that most new bolt-action rifles you buy today are descended from the Mauser design.

I agree with the rest. I have never paid more than $150 for any surplus weapon. They are surplus. $299 is not a surplus price for a mauser. Look around and find one cheaper and use the savings to buy ammo.:)

i saw a mittchell k98 at a local gun store. big mitchell labels, but i was very suprised by the roughness of the rifle and the $400 price tag. i would have been very disapointed if that rifle had arrived ups. i did order a 1939 k98 from classic arms for $249. bore described nra good, bright with strong lands and grooves. someone here recommended looking at them. it will arrive today by ups. what i liked was not buying a pig in a poke. if they are accurate in their descriptions, and they do go to lengths to detail the condition of the rifles, including marking and bores, i will be pleased by what is delivered. and they price accordingly. hard to reach by telephone, however.

I got one 6-8 years ago. It was ok, I did get a 4 digit serial number, all 4 numbers the same, and the particular number kind of unique. It did come with bayonet, cleaning kit, ammo pouch, sling, ect. It was a clean nice rifle, probably over priced but I was satisfied It did have an arsenal repair is the left side of forearm, must have been a big knot or something in wood, but the patch fits extremely well, I cannot feel the splice joint it's so smooth. Stock is a nice bold figured elm, kind of a golden orange color. Bore is excellent and it is a good shooter.

I probably would not do it again, as I do not need or care for all the "accessories" that contribute to the cost from them.

I can say that for about 2/3 of mine, bought a bunch of Swiss K-31's for $79, High one was 139 at a gun show but it had a fantastic flame walnut stock.
About 15 years ago I got a M96 Swede for $69, try that now, a rough one will run 350 and up. I just saw a nice one in a gunshop marked 695, and was tempted.

Fortunes made and lost...

Essex County--Yr lucky my coffee cup was empty, or you'd owe me for a keyboard mishap! (Chortle!! Snort!)

You know the quotes: "There's a sucker born every minute." (P. T. Barnum) and "It is morally wrong to allow suckers to keep their money." (I don't know)

And of course, you know the method for leaving Las Vegas with a small fortune, don't you? Go there with a large one.

Mitchell's Mausers is in business for Mitchell's Mausers. Not for you. Not for me. As the Romans said, back in the day, Caveat emptor. (Let the buyer beware.)

Well thanks for all the info guys, thats why forums are great now I know where to get a Mauser if I wanna get screwed, im gonna check out those other site now wish me luck.
