KEANSBURG, N.J. — An hourlong standoff with a Keansburg woman who threatened to detonate a live grenade was ended by police when they agreed to buy the explosive from her for $100.

Authorities say Julia Smith became distraught after her neighbor, who has power of attorney over the 51-year-old's affairs, had her dog euthanized Monday.

Police found Smith with the World War II grenade in her hand and a butcher knife nearby.

Smith eventually told officers she would sell them the grenade for $100.

Police Chief Raymond O'Hare tells the Asbury Park Press that he luckily had the cash on him.

After turning over the grenade, Smith threatened to kill herself with the knife. She eventually surrendered and was taken to a hospital.

Smith is charged making terroristic threats, weapons offenses and creating a widespread risk.

No word where she got the grenade.

"After turning over the grenade, Smith threatened to kill herself with the knife."

Probably thought, after successfully negotiating $100 for the grenade, maybe they'll offer $10 for the knife! I hope this doesn't become a trend: taxes are high enough already, and individual cops can't really afford this kind of ongoing expense.

was it a real grenade, though? There isnt much follow-up on this yet.

"Smith is charged making terroristic threats, weapons offenses and creating a widespread risk."

that's a big NO IMO.

Why does someone else have power of attorney over a 51 year old? If she's so unstable she needs somone else to have POA over her, maybe she should be in a facilitated care home?

She was no longer able to determine her own destiny

To be safe and free to control our own destinies. We all have a right to that, and some of us choose to be armed to protect those rights. Unfortunately that lady was desperately unwise in her choice of weapon and will pay the price. There is a big difference between exercising our rights responsibly, and endangering the neighborhood in desperation. I hope they get her safe and stable.

When did this charge of "terroristic threats" come into being? It seems to be used as a "catchall" charge for anyone doing anything these days, which doesn't sit well with me.

Well I guess it's his grenade now so he can keep it.

As to the terroristic threats, I saw an article of kids making a dry ice bomb (dry ice in a 2 liter coke bottle) and it said that they got arrested for terrorism. Are you kidding me? All that does is make a loud noise. Anybody standing all but 5 feet away would be pretty safe. Nobody was even there when they were blowing it up.

This terrorism aura is a scapegoat for all kinds of problems that society has. What happened to personal responsibility?

If it was inert, even though vintage WWII, she made one heckuva deal there didn't she??? Can't you still get the WWII vintage for $25 or less? I would say the $100 is gone...he made a deal and if he's not going to return the grenade, the money belongs to her. :D
