I have an older Springfield 1911 "Loaded" -- from the days when this model was made with staked on front sight and the edges were extremely sharp.

A while back when I lived elsewhere I had the edges softened somewhat by a local, no-name gunsmith. I haven't used the gun much, but I am now interested in shooting the 1911 more and possibly carrying it.

I noticed that the gun wreaks havoc on the inside of my leather holster (Mitch Rosen Premier) and is not exactly pleasant to handle either. I am thinking about getting a "carry melt" done.

First of all, is this advisable? Would it affect the integrity of the metal/parts at all? Also, to which gunsmith should I send it? I live in Northern Virginia -- is there any local gunsmith who is capable of this kind of edge beveling?

I had a Commander with the Clark Custom meltdown. It was sweet!

That is one of only a few guns that I regret selling! They do great work.

I haven't had any issues with strength/integrity of any part of my gun and it's got a pretty radical melt. Clark's is the place to go for that sort of work but you'll have to call and check with them, they had cut back on the 1911 work they were taking in. I've had Dietrichs break do a carry bevel on a couple guns and they've done a great job, you might call them and ask Robin what he thinks about doing more of a "melt". He's intimately familiar with my Compact so he'll know what your looking for.

Does anyone know a good gunsmith who might be able to do this kind of treatment in Northern Virginia?

Nope. But you can also check with Chuck Rodgers, he does a melt on his guns that really rounds the corners and looks very cool and unique.
