No, they are not on the shelves but it's really not that hard to find if you want it. I've been using gunbot.net and have bought about 2500 rounds this year. No, it's not last years prices but it's under .10 a round.

At the largest guns and ammo store in the area the guy said that he's been ordering and getting in more .22 ammo then they ever have in the history of the store but it's been selling as soon as it comes in. To repeat, stores are getting it but you (me included) are buying it as soon as it shows up.

340PD,
I live in Central, Mn. as well, I sure would like to know where you are finding this 22LR ammo, all the stores I go to haven't had 22LR ammo for over 6 months.

I am shooting Bricks that I bought in the late 1990's. All go bang. I have read stories/blogs of some of the rounds in the last few years having issues of going Bang. I also have a couple of bricks of 22LRMagnum. In the centerfire area I bought lots in the early 1990's (working for a gun store) and even more in 2007 and more in 2011 as I saw the political climate failing. Components and lead. Already had tons of Brass. I bought every payday, a pound of powder, 1K-5K of primers, 1K of bullets. Sometimes had to wait a couple of paydays to get some items. Steady buying over time makes for full shelves. It was all paid for no credit card bills, and never paid a premium for any item.

I got a bunch of 22 mag from Midway and Cabelas, both on the same day about a month ago. Must have been delivery day, because my LGS is the only place I could find it before and after that lucky day. 22 LR has started showing up everywhere (except Wally's of course) here in Central FL lately. Gander, LGS, etc. Just a timing issue, as it has been for the last couple of years, plus that price...

Here's the 22 shortage in a nutshell.

In 2008 the banks crashed and quit loaning money. This really put the crunch on manufacturing and led to much scaling back on production expansions, Maintanece and equipment upgrades.

Then Obama got elected and everyone freaked out buying everything in sight. No biggie it was just an anomaly and within a few months things were back to normal.

S&w and a dozen other GUN manufacturers come out with fun, cheap and ammo hungry 22's. these sell like hot cakes and not just to "old gun guys" but to hundreds of thousands of new shooters.

Things go wrong at this point

Ammo Manufacturers still running 2008 scared fail to notice the HUGE increase in new shooters . They think this "new normal" is just another anomaly. So they merely ramp production up to 100% without adding more capacity.

Then Obama gets reelected and we have another tragedy fueled panic run. This quickly exhausts razor thin stockpiles and even MORE folks buy tacticool 22's that need ammo.

So TODAY you have ammo makers loading with 1980's production capacity with 2013 demand scratching their heads saying "Oh!!! You mean there are more shooters now?". So now we are today waiting for new production lines to be completed. Do not expect things to improve till this happens.

i went to sportsman warehouse in lex ky monday, labor day. had about 30 + people at door. they had about 300/100ct CCI mini mags for sale. limit 3 , it was 7.99. i bought 3, it was sold out in about 15 mins. i haven't seen any 22 at walmart since december. i have seen 22 at gun shops for 50.00 to 89.99 for 500ct. i just not going to buy it, i have some allready put back, from a long time ago, 8.00 not a deal, but i made a excuse to buy it. walmarts in my area do have 22 when they have it for 22.99. must be a inside deals going on there. i am going to wait it out, which might be forever

The fact is people are mad, people want to blame somebody/anybody, and a large number of people are going to whine and bitch no matter what methods any retailer chooses.

Keep prices low...out of stock (must only be selling to flippers or diverting to employees/friends)

Charge market price...greedy gougers who don't deserve any business in the future

Quantity limits? Stupid, waste of time to go there when you can only get X amount.

No quantity limits? Stupid, just sell everything to to the first few guys in line so they can hoard it or flip it and nobody else gets anyway.

Damned if they do, damned if they don't. People who didn't have and don't have ammo, but want it, in as much quantity as they want, at the prices they used to pay, are going to be pissy no matter what.
but you are whining and bitching about them whining and bitching

i have not fired a 22 lr shell in a year. because i can not find a single cartridge to replace the few i have. it will all sit on the shelf and rot before i shoot it ALL up, and have a useless gun. personally, i hope the hoarders grow old and eventually die with their 500,000 rounds + of ammo, that is sitting in a corner collecting dust. the scalpers, i can not even begin to voice my view of them, because i would get kicked off this site. lets just say that even Obama, and Satan are better in my eyes than those trying to make riches over others misery.
Amen

My LGS has all the .22 you want, at 2 to 4 times the pre panic prices. Local walmarts haven't had any on shelfs since January. New Gander Mountain had lots on shelf opening day at about 1.5 X pre panic prices. But that was yesterday and I haven't looked back to see if shelves were cleaned out.

Sure, if people wanted to join the early crowd at Walmart, either they could be there at sunrise on their days off, chugging from a
green bottle of Mountain Dew.

On the other days, guys could either ask a wife to do so, or breadwinners can Easily quit their jobs (some work out of town, and require sleep).
That make a lot of sense..........
For those who did not plan ahead on ammo, most don't have much of a choice.

For the new young shooter who just got his .22 for his birthday or for last Christmas there is no "planning ahead".

And to keep the shooting sports viable we need the new shooters.

What's funny is 90% of the people complaining will never stock up when things return to normal and ammo is stacked up on the shelves. Then next panic will be the same thing. I'm only 37 and I've been through at least a half dozen panics. This isn't new. Just relax. No one is banning ammo. At least not until 2015.

That is a very good point. Those people deserve a little slack...but anybody who was a shooter in 2008 should have known better.

It's the same with AR rifles and 10+ capacity mags. Unless you are a young person then the 1994-2004 ban should have been all the prompting needed to buy all you ever needed in 2005-2008.

The folks with the "tin foil hats" who had the foresight to stock up on ammo, especially after Nov. '08 came and went, must be chuckling at their 'sage' critics who are running in circles trying to find any ammo. I began "hoarding" .22 (to shoot, not sell at a profit) some time ago when state lawmakers had threatened to slap a five cent tax on every round. That threat has not gone away....anyone have a pre lock model 617 for sale???

Ammo is out there IF you back order or get lucky. I ordered 2 cases back in February. Got one 5000rd case in July, the other is scheduled for October. I shoot a minimum of 2000rds of .22 a year so that's only 5 years worth.

That quote by FDR, "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself" is exactly what is happening now.

That coming from a socialist who was tame by today's standards...today that should be read as "don't fear us, we're on your side and know what is best for you"

Walmart in Eden Prairie has provided me with .22 ammo all year. Limited availability but I check there often. Three box limit. about 6¢/round. Gander Mountain (Eden Prairie) has a ten box limit and my co worker picked up 1000 rds of CCI for $79. The following day he picked up an additional 2000 rounds ow some new version of Winchester for 6¢/round.

Walmart ammo is spotty. Gander in EP gets it on Thursday.
At our range, (South Metro Public Safety) my customers tell me they are finding ammo all over the place. Some are ordering through the Gander online and pickup at the store. Mills Fleet Farm last week had lots of every caliber except 9mm & .22lr

back in 09 when I couldn't get pistol ammo at WW I switched to mini-mag at $6.50 a box when it got to $7.00 I quit buying, truth be told now I'd pay $8.00 happily but I wouldn't pay the going rate for the crap stuff now.

At one point I had both the Ruger 10/22 and Smith&Wesson 15-22 this year. Although I had some 22lr ammo, I could not afford to shoot both so I sold the 10/22 :(

Fortunately you can find 10/22's very easily now and I can buy one whenever rimfire ammo comes back around.

Wow. The mere concept of selling a firearm just because there is a current ammo shortage baffles the mind. Did you guys sell your cars when gasoline prices went over $4/gallon, too? Jeez. Calm down. Take some advice from the old-timers for a change; it's happened many times before, and this one will pass, too. Be patient, and learn from your mistakes (of not buying when you can). When you get some ammo, come join us at the range.

Something is going on.
People say the hoarders are snapping the .22 stuff up but the reality in my area is there isn't enough .22 coming in to begin with and all the retailers have huge backorders of the stuff.
When it does come in, it's a 5000 or 5500 round case and one case only and that just doesn't last very long even with buy limits.
That's what I've been trying to say yet noone listens. The ammo is simply not making it to the stores and when it does it may be only one case or even less. Where is it. I wish I knew. In my area the the slow improvement in supply seems to be going downhill. Less 9mm,22lr and other calibers.

A lot of imbeciles did just this. I can remember big old SUVs being priced cheap because all the balogne brained idiots flocked into hybrids which the math didn't work on anyway.

Morons will be morons. :banghead:

I don't get the whole rimfire thing. I guess people went after it as a cheap alternative?

I don't shoot enough rimfire to get assed up about a shortage. A few thousand rounds lasts me a few years.

A friend of mine has called me twice in the past 3 weeks, "Got any use for a brick of .22's, I got'm if you want 'em." Dang near tore the tires off the car getting over there, yep, brand new boxes too....... and I didn't ask where he got them either! Win. 525 box.
