GREAT cd! I bought the first one and liked it and then the maker (forget her name) told me that, since I had bought it within a certain time period before the release of second edition, I got the second edition for free! Got that and love it. It really teaches you the whole mil-dot thing. The current edition has different calibers that you can choose. I am wanting them to give you different reticle types, too. Maybe some day. It would be nice if they let you custom-design reticles to try their ranging properties.
Even if you don't use mildots, do this exercise while you're out on foot. Look at an item and estimate the distance. Pace yourself off (1 step = 1 meter). Do this continually. This is what the Confederates did when they taught their sharpshooters how to estimate distances. For you skeptics remember that the artilleryman (gunlayer to be specific) had not only to aim the gun, but also estimate the distance so that the fuse was properly cut. Too short and the shell would burst prematurely. Too long and it would give the defenders either time to discard it or skedaddle.
That will give you a good rough estimate. I have found through surveying and practical application that the inseam measurement on your pants is your step distance. Don't try to pace it out like some people do. Just do a normal walk and you'll find that this is true. I know this sounds a bit odd, but it's true.
...Never could get the range, exactly. I was always between 10 and 70 yards off. Guess I'm not gauging my mils right? Anyway, a lotta fun. I gotta get that one!!
Great practice for those rainy days when you can't get to the range.
Of course, I'm curious to see what some of you boys scored...me, first time round was a whole, heart-stopping 20!!! Well, at least no one died for my lack of skills...
Hmm.... I just finished playing the demo and ended up with a final score of 47. Not knowing the size of the mildots and the spacing between the crosshair and the first dot made it more difficult. It took a minimum of 4 shots for me to get a hit. Plus, I thought the demo was a little confusing about the wind direction and the values used on the ballistics card. I was always over-estimating how much windage to use.
I'm sure the real version explains some of these things better and I may still decide to purchase it.
