MINDSET
Yes.
The mind is the weapon.
The gun, rock, stick, knitting needle or whatever is the tool.

Situational awareness includes identification of weapons.

Once an attack is launched upon you or yours, it is time to transition from defense to offense and quell the threat with whatever tool is at hand.

Sam...used carb cleaner to nail a wannabee carjacker.

Mindset is the topic here in non-firearm.

Please discuss.

Similar thoughts.

This is an update of an older post, I hope it stimulates some discussion.

Been trying to put my thoughts on my Self defense philosophy into a format I can share with others. It is more about thinking and planning than blazing guns.
Here it is. Tell me what you think. It is not carved in stone and I am open to all suggestions!

I use the acronym STARE W

S = Situational awareness. Think. Be aware of what is around you, and how it is developing, and how it will affect you. In a static situation like the home, keep thinking and re-evaluating your plan.

T = Train with all your weapons of choice. Create a layered defense, Become
proficient using your brain, hands, impact weapons, knives, and guns.
Think about other things that can be improvised weapon in a given
situation.

A = Avoid potential trouble. Blend in. Keep your mouth shut.

R = Remove yourself from the area, run, walk, drive.

E = Escape or evade from the problem, if you can

and the W is:

W = Win if fighting is your only option.

You notice its more about mindset, skill set, then tool set.

I believe that mindset is the single most important thing one can posses. All the tools or toys you have, are nothing without the mindset to use them. Having the mindset not to be a victim.

Being an old fart, and a partly disabled old fart to boot, from an old service injury, I like to keep abreast of the kinds of crimes in my neck of the woods. Crimes against "older" people in particular. Sometimes there is an incident that reafirms my faith in mindset.

There was this "older" lady who was sitting in a church. Now one would think a church is a place where one can sit and relax the vigilance. This lady was sitting in a pew, writing in a journal. A street person slinks in, most likely looking for something to steal, see's the lone woman in a empty church, goes up and grabs her and tries to drag her into a side room to assault her. Wrong move.

This one little old church lady had the mindset, that no way was she going to be a victim. Using the ball point pen she had in her hand, the would be attacker ended up with a bloody pockmarked face that made it very easy for the police to spot him and pick him up after the lady drove him off. She used a pen to inflict serious bleeding holes in his face.

Mindset; she used what was handy to defend, and not be a victim.

An example of lack of mindset was on one of the gun forums not too long ago. A man had to accompany his son on a class trip to Washinton D.C. He was very uptight because he was coming from a CCW state, and was used to carrying his Glock everyplace. He had to leave all his toys home. He said his whole trip to the Capital was ruined because he felt he could not defend himself being totally weaponless in Washinton D.C. He said he was very furious that when a panhandler asked him for money, he felt so defenseless without his gun, he gave him a dollar just to get rid of him. He ended up his post with saying that he'd never come to D.C. again, because he couldn't carry a gun. I actually felt a little sorry for him, being so dependant on carrying a gun that he won't travel again. On the other hand I feel a little contemptious of him as well, for being so immature that he let his gun become his manhood. I guess nobody ever told him that Cross pen in his right hand can be brought up right under the chin of someone, and really change an over agressive attitude. Or a nice stout walking stick can be a very effective defense tool.

Mindset can make all the difference in the world.

Thats the point exactly. Mindset.
Innovate, adapt, overcome.
My Daughter got her masters at Columbia in NYC. One day she got hassled by 2 mental midgets who thought a 5' 1'' 110 lb young girl was a good mark.

"Failure of the victem selection process" -One got kicked in the nads(she has MA training) the other got one of those combs with the thin handle raked accross his face.

Women have the advantage over us- they get to carry all sorts of "innocent" items in a handy purse. And they get underestimated, like a Q-ship.

Its the idea behind a book I saw a while back "101 ways to kill someone with a tootsie pop" anything can be the tool, its just needs the mind behind it. A golf club or baseball bat can be just as lethal as a .45 if you have the mind set to know what your doing. Or just visit a jail and you will see how simple bed springs are made into spikes, and cardboard and wire makes a single shot shotgun.

Never underestimate the power of the mind.

Exactly!

I don't recall the name of the movie, but there was a great example of it. I think the actor was Robert DeNero. He was sitting in this resuraunt eating, and this guy comes up to him, and kind of threatens him, then askes what's he gonna do about it?

De Nero looks at the guy for a minute, then calmly tells him he's gonna take the fork and put it right through his eyeball. The guy leaves.

I've never thought about dinner forks and butter knives the same again.:D
