Mini 30, M1 Carbine, or SKS for wife

Since it's supposed to be her gun, my suggestion is to let her feel and fondle among the three choices and see what SHE likes. Any of them will work for home defense, so whichever she prefers will likely be the one with which she can best defend herself.

Cost? Hey, what's her life worth?

out of the choices mentioned my vote goes to the m1 its light and handles nicely IMO...the sks is heavy and awkward in close spaces and idk have any experience with the mini's...but i feel for a SD/HD application a shotgun is the best choice...my lady keeps a 20ga SxS as an HD weapon...u only have 2 shots but its dead nuts reliable...but as mentioned before take her with to a show or shop and let her handle the various options

Maverick223, I don't think there is such a thing as "factory" 20 round mags for the min-30, mini-14 yes. Ruger has actually said they may make some 20, possibly 30 round mags in the near future.
As others have said...the future is now.

:)

Hey hso ! I can get you not one , but two Inland M1's for probably about $550 each, and still make enough myself to buy a case of Wolf .223 !
If you are interested, drop me a PM and I can pick em up for you. You are close to me ( I think) I am not far from Cleveland, Tn.

Mini 30, M1 Carbine, or SKS for wife

Any one of them will do and have adequate accuracy out to 100 yards which is not really needed in a HD rifle. You're chances of shooting over 25 yds in a HD situation are very rare. You will have to justify why the BG was still a threat to you at any range and the threat level usually decreases as the range increases.

I'd add a stock Saiga to the list (I'd pick the 223).

I would lean toward the 223 or 30 carbine. Use a SP or hollowpoint not a FMJ. The 7.62x39 offers no distinct advantage for HD if you're using a SP or hollowpoint in the other calibers.

I find the Mini 14 ot M1 carbine more user friendly and easier to feed (magazines) although 10 rds should see you through in a HD situation.

The safety on the Saiga is easier to find.

You need to let your wife decide what she wants. Don't do it for her.

I'm actually leaning towards the M1 Carbine as it is the lightest and smallest of the options. I know the round may be considered by many to be anemic, but I think for my purposes, it will get the job done.

The other issue with the M1 carbine is ammo can be pricey since you will want to use CorBon's ammunition to get the best effect.

The 30 carbine in SP or hollowpoint makes it a totally different animal comapred to the FMJ. I have seen it work well out to 100 yds or so. I see no magic in the Corbon ammo and Corbon themselves admitted they had problems getting it to feed reliabily. I've seen no problmes in feeding with conventional SP ammo.

I own a Mini30 as well as the 9mm and .45acp Marlin Camp carbines (and owned an M1 but sold like a fool) and would recommend the M1 over a Mini30 due to possible over-penetration if you are in an urban area. it's also quicker handling and better 'balance' IMO. the M30 would do well as a bush deer rifle though, what it's designed for, it's done well to fill my doe tags.

Ultimately it's your wife's decision, but IMO the M1 carbine is the best suited of the three to HD. It is lighter than either of the other options, and the lighter bullets with lower sectional density are effective without being too overpenetrative. Magazines are cheaper than the Mini Thirty's, and very good JHP's are available.

Think of the M1 carbine as a 30-shot .357 magnum that (optionally) folds for storage...

If by "Home Defense" you mean inside the home then I wouldn't use any of the above, I would get her a 9mm or a .40 S&W. If she needs something to reach out with I would get the Mini or a M1 Carbine. The M1 Carbine is a better choice for a rifle inside the home IMHO. What I preach to my wife is grab the handgun and phone, retreat behind locked doors and be ready.

Just a question about using any of these rifles discussed for HD. What is the danger of over penetration / going through walls and such.

That's really the main reason I think the semi-auto or pump shotgun would be a better choice.

This depends on the ammunition selected. A good HP will penetrate less at close range than 00 buckshot.

Personally, at close range, I believe a .30 Carbine round works just fine with SP or HP ammunition. I would prefer the much better ergonomics of the M1 for that reason, but wouldn't feel too handicapped with an SKS.

A second choice might be a Marlin camp carbine in 9mm. A lot less blast and recoil plus ammo is cheap compared to 30 carbine. The gun is also lightweight and short. There are several 9mm rifles on the market.

I shoot mine at a hundred yards everytime I shoot it. Hitting a 3" post offhand 7 out of 10 tries is pretty easy. my buddies son shot his first deer with one. It ran 45 yards and died. Lots of blood and an exit wound. That was with a soft point bullet. I hollow point should minimize the exits.

I like the 30 carbine but the ammo cost stops me from getting one. Too many mouths to feed already.

Somebody help me here:eek:
What are those little el-cheapo carbines that shoot a 9mm ??

Hi-Point !

I think they now come in a .40 S&W now too. They are U-G-L-Y, but I ear they go bang every time. You can get some pretty cool aftermarket stuff too....you can make em look like the guns the apes used on "Planet of the Apes":D

I stand corrected, just ordered/on backorder a 20 round mag for my mini-30. Now the wait. I will buy more; hopefully cheaper after they have been out a while/supply catches up.
