I just loaded up some 9mm and was putting a few through a Wilson case gauge. I noticed one of them being quite a bit shorter so I measured it. The short one was .715 for the length of the case. Most of the others were around .75.

Is it safe to shoot the case that is .715 or should I just pull the projectile and toss it?

Thanks

That's pretty short. If it were me, I wouldn't shoot that one.

9mm is already a high pressure cartridge, so when case capacity is decreased by a significant degree, pressures will increase I would think.

Toss it!

It is a 9mm Luger case somebody trimmed to make a 9mm Makarov case out of.

9mm Luger case Trim Too = .751".
9mm MAK case trim Too = .710.

It's pretty common to find them in range pick-up brass.

You have to set them base up on the table and throw away the short ones before loading them.

PS: Your case volume is not decreased if the OAL of the loaded round is the same.
You just don't have near as much case neck holding the bullet in the case.

I pulled the projectile, saved the powder and tossed the case.

Thanks so much.

MAK trimmed 9mm cases are the Spawn of the devil I tell ya!!!

People should be shot for contaminating a target rich range environment littered with 9mm marked brass I tell ya!!!

Excellent advise as always from rcmodel. I have learned from the THR members some common sense steps and the first thing I do coming back from the range is separate the different calibers by putting them up on the table so I can compare and separate.

The 9mm Luger is one of those cartridges that headspaces from the case mouth. As stated in the Lyman 49: "Do no reduce cases below the trim-to length." The SAAMI case length dimension is .754" -.010"; Lyman states the trim-to length as .751".

You did the prudent thing in pulling the loads apart.

You should have saved that case and bought a gun chambered for 9mm Makarov.
LOL. :)

If your 9mm pistol has a "controlled feed extractor," as most (if not all) locked breech pistols do, just shoot it. This isn't much different from shooting 9x19 in a gun chambered for 9x21 IMI.
