Got a stock finishing question here. I've got a Boyds"Tacticool" laminate stock that I bought unfinished from Midway for my 597. I sanded the stock to a smooth finish (several repetitions of sanding, wipe with a wet rag then sand again to knock down the raised grain) and have applied two light coats of boiled linseed oil applied with 0000 steel wool.

Looking at the stock now, I'd really like to darken the finish somewhat and maybe add a bit of red. Would it work do add a Minwax stain on top of the BLO? They are both oil based, but I'm concerned that the Minwax won't take to the grain so well with two coats of BLO in there already. Would this work, or would I have to start over for the Minwax to take?

Just because everyone loves pics, here is how it looks right now:

The minwax product may work a lot BETTER now that you've got oil in the pores.

The biggest problem with stains is their tendency to suck into the more open pores but only lay on top of the more impermeable areas of the wood grain. This distorts the differences between the growth rings of the wood's figure and makes them stand out far too strongly. It also tends to completely dominate and flatten any "shimmer" or flame in the figure leaving it muddy and dull.

At the very least you should seal the grain before you apply a stain to try to reduce the ability of the stain to penetrate. (Read more: http://www.woodworking-news.com/woodworking-tips/grain-fillers.shtml Not perfect, but a start.)

If the oil has cured, you may reach success without the heavy-handed effect.

I realize this is a laminated stock, so you aren't trying to enhance a beautiful wood figure anyway, but this would still be my advice.
