Got these in at work a couple weeks ago. Thought you might like to see what the Navy is using now day's. This gun is our designated boarding rifle and is set up fairly well. I don't care for the BUIS but ya take what you can get

:)

Interesting CQB weapon. A pretty nice setup for the task actually. Thanks for sharing the pic.

What kind of ship is this on? Is this a common weapon on ships now?

I notice an A1 pistol grip. It's built on an M16A1 lower? Full auto, not three round burst?

My dad was on destroyers in the 50's and 60's. I grilled him with a lot of questions too. ;) Aparently, in his day they used Thompsons and 1911s. They had some Garands too... mostly used those to kill sharks.

What!?! Where's the built in cutlass blade!? How can you carry that thing in your teeth when swinging across decks from a yardarm!?

Next, you are going to tell me it can't fire a buck and ball cartridge!:p

A1

DMK: The gun is built on an A1 lower, full auto. They are the new issue gun for any ship with an active boarding team. I was on a Frigate (transfered yesterday), so any of the smaller ships with VBSS mission will have this gun.
In my first armory we still had Thompsons and 1911's along with the other weapons. Now there is a real mix MK18, M-14's M-16's and other stuff.

bowfin: The cutlas is a great idea.

Man, I would have joined the army earlier if they had made me carry one of those. All I ever carried in boarding parties was an M14 and a good old 45. I set up an M60 on the deck of a couple freightors before too but those were special circumstances. The M14 was it back then. I'm talking 80's and 90's. I'm not that old. When did the navy start turning to the dark side?

You may want to black out the serial number as that's a government owned weapon. :uhoh:

Ah, so that's a Mk18 Mod0

Thanks for sharing the info gunjunky. That's interesting that they still had Thompsons and 1911s in ships armories so late. I'll have to let my dad know. He loved those Thompsons. I think he was dissapointed that he never got to board any ships in the Cuban Missle Crisis blockade. ;)

Good luck and stay safe at your new post! :)

We still have the M-14 and it is still the great rifle it has always been, I even had one mounted with a very nice optic.

But when we started to expand our force protection role after 9/11 we started to look for black rifles for watch standers. Now the MK18 has a special role.

I got out of the Navy back in 95 to join the Army. I have no idea what I was thinking so.......
It sure did suck going from an M-14 to an M16. Not even an A1. My first issue weapon didn't even have a forward assist. I made the best with what I had though. I retired just after 9-11 so missed out on all the recent changes.
I do hope the navy never gets rid of the M14 though. It was always my favorite and has saved my tail more than once. Panama and a lot of boarding parties.
