I have been tossing the idea of building a Mosin Nagant as I want it. I would like to have a pistol grip with a full buttstock or a Dragunav style stock. I know there is a Monte Carlo stock from ATI and there is a guy on YouTube that makes custom stocks. I have an idea and would like to see how it goes. Bipod is an easy mod that I'm not concerned with, its the stock. I know their cheap rifles and ill probably put more effort into it than most will consider worth it. If anyone out there has any suggestions on possible stocks I could work with I would appreciate the heads up.

Nice link, thanks for that. It's going to be an adventure, game on... I just to go visit a gunsmith I know and hash it out with him. (advice wise) I'm almost certain he will be a big help and I know he will make sure I don't start on the path of 'neckin it up.

Stocks...

Ruddie--I always advise people looking for a nice stock to check out Boyd's Stocks. They make laminated stocks for a wide variety of rifles--It would surprise me considerably if they don't have something nice for the Mosin, given that there are so many of those out there.

I'd get a Boyd's stock "unfinished" were I you--boyd-speak for not varnished; all the inletting is done except for mebbe a few small final adjustments. That way you can fit the stock to YOUR rifle, glass-bed the stock, and make any small modifications that occur to you, before the varnish goes on.

You'll have to sand, and sand, and sand some more of course, the most tedious part of any woodworking project, but the results are likely to make you smile. Boyd's sells a finishing kit if you want, but I got dandy results with sandpaper and spray-can satin spar varnish from my local hdwe store. I used an Acraglas kit from Midway, IIRC, for the glass-bedding. Boyd's sells that also. If I had it to do over I'd use Acragel instead--less runny but the same results.

As to "more effort than you think it is worth," only you can decide that. When you go modifying rifles to your own taste, (a) you'll never get your $$$ back out of the rifle, and (b) nothing is more satisfying than having a rifle that you designed and built yourself--except successfully hunting with that selfsame rifle!

Good luck and please keep us posted on your progress, with pictures!! :)

Richards Micro Fit makes quite a few versions of stocks for the Mosin... http://rifle-stocks.com/

I have consider Modding a Mosin but by the time you spend the money on the stock, a new barrel, scope mounts and all the rest I figured I would be better off starting with a Remington or Savage action and not be restricted to such a long action and oddball round.

Ok, so here's what I got accomplished today, I went to my gunsmith and threw the idea around with him. He simply reaches into a parts bin and hands me an old thumbhole buttstock for a AK-47 and says "make it work". We discussed the reinforcement method. Counter sink 2 nuts into the original stock, take 2 short threaded bars and sink the other end into the AK stock. All of this after Modding the Nagant stock and the AK stock.....

Today I start the shaping of the two stocks. If everything goes as planned (heh) I should be setting and glueing the stocks this afternoon. Tomorrow will be filled with smoothing the two stocks as one. Sanding and filing A LOT.... If time allows I'll be putting the base coat on it tomorrow afternoon.... I'll try to remember pics and updates as I go along.(if I can figure out how to upload from my phone to the forum) All I can say is game on....

Well, I'm back at square one. I need a m44 or an m38 to start with. My wife forbid me to use my m38 even though its a refurb m44 stock. Plus its a good looking stock. The broken Nagant I have won't do due to the stock being broken in a bad place. I would rather not use a 91/30 because of the length but I might have to if I can't find a short one I would feel fine cutting up. I'll probably just order a oem stock if I can find one that's a reasonable price. I do have a set of replacement screws and a pillar bedding kit ordered.

classic arms had them for like 25 dollars a few weeks ago... hidden at the bottom of their website (classicarms.us)

.... I'm glad you know my capabilities as far as fabricating things. I'm extremely motivated to not make it look like "crap". As far as it being stupid, its my project and if I wanted to mount a tricycle handle bars to it and attempt to ride it around I will.... my gun, my mess up.

If the stock is broken on one of them, why not jsut remove the stock completely and start from scratch? Just curious, as I have never tried to work on a Mosin before.

Oh, it goes without say, but please post pictures when you're done :D

LOL! Well-said! :D Do whatever you want with your own possessions. His opinion doesn't matter one lick.

I've thought of tinkering with my Mosin stock, as well. Not quite to your extent, just more of a refinish and maybe even glass bedding it. I only have one Mosin, however. So it had better come out right!

I'm curious to see how yours comes out. Make sure to show us some fabrication photos and describe what you're doing. I love woodworking. Subscribed! :)

I would love to start from scratch. I'm just not that confident yet. When I get to that point, there's no telling what ill come up with. Until then, ill stick with the kitty pool.

There were 17 million Mosins made and not all are collectible although most are shootable.

If it were, say, one of a model only made for two years in numbers less than 200,000 yeah I would complain. I have one all-matching Mosin 91/30 that will stay "as-issued" and I have a parts carbine that I have bubba'ed at will and may yet try a "scout rifle" project on.

I can remember when importer bubba'ed mil surplus rifles sold for more than as-issued versions in the same condition. I also regret "sporterizing" a couple of surplus rifles that I now wish I had not, even though neither was in collectible grade condition. (The local military matchs require as-issued for competition.)

cutting up and bubbafying mil-surp guns is stupid and they always look like crap

I love cutting up these mil-surps, as they're called. I get a great feeling when the hack-saw blade burns its track into the barrel. I smile when I think of all the history buffs and mil-surp fanatics out there who would cringe if they only could see what I was doing to their cosmoline polluted refuse.

you should check www.surplusrifle.com there is an awesome article about mounting a russian PSO scope to a Mosin. If your after a Dragonov, thats about as close to the real thing you can get with a Mosin.

good luck, post pictures, and ignore all the people that tell you not to do it. They are just jealous and enjoy being trolls :)

I'm not worried with messing up a $100 rifle due to, well , it being a $100 rifle. I'm ordering a stock to work on, not taking a whole rifle apart. If everything goes accordingly, ill order the other parts if successful. I'll be using my M38 as a reference point.

.... Imma put a underfolder on it with a quad rail and laser with 3 flashlights...... and a coffee maker.
