I just bought a S&W model 10, 2 inch barrel. I was wondering if someone could point me to a site where I can look up the date of manufacture.
The serial number is C137XXX. It's an older model, firing pin on the hammer.

Dasmi based on this post http://www.thehighroad.org/showpost.php?p=3146552&postcount=13 indicating that C3982xx guns were made 54-56, and that the C prefix started in the late 40s after the S prefix I'd guess that your Model 10 with a C137xxx SN was made in the late 40s or very early 50s. As indicated in XavieBreath's post you may want to remove the wood stocks (if it has them) and see if they're matched to the gun.

XB referenced post expains your M&P Pre-10 well - you scored a very desireable revolver. For $30 you can get a factory letter from Smith exactly when the factory shipped the revolver and where it was shipped to.

Ain't no "Model 10" made in 1955.

Model numbers weren't used until about 1957. If the gun is a Model 10 it will have MOD 10 stamped on frame under cylinder crane.

The correct term is Military & Police (short for Hand Ejector, 4th Model, Military & Police).

Now you know why they started using numbers. Much easier to remember. :p

M&P ser. # 140495 was shipped in Jan. 1951. Your gun was probably in thatsame time frame, however S&W does not ship guns by serial number sequence. As Saxon sez - your gun is not a Model 10 but a good ole' .38 Hand ejector Military & Police, 4th change. It's possible that it could be a transitional model as guns made after WW2 were phasing in the short throw actions from the older long throw versions and used up parts from pre-WW2. If so, the frame will only have the Made in USA stamping on the right side and not the additional Marcus Registradas stamp. Ed.
