MOSCOW, Idaho (AP) -- A sniper sprayed dozens of bullets on a courthouse in an attack that left one dead and two wounded, then hid in a nearby church for several hours before police stormed in Sunday and found his body and another man's inside, police said.

The shooting began late Saturday, fatally wounding one officer and injuring another and a civilian, said David Duke, Moscow's assistant police chief. Duke said the attack was apparently an ambush, with the gunman firing into the Latah County Courthouse to lure people into his line of fire.

Shortly after 6 a.m., three SWAT teams entered the First Presbyterian Church and found the two bodies on the main floor but not in the same room, Duke said. An automatic assault rifle, ammunition and spent shells were found with one of the men, he said.

The shooter died of what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, Duke said. His body was found in the church sanctuary, and the body of another man was found in the church office. Authorities did not release either man's name.

Duke identified the slain officer as Lee Newbill, who had served with the Moscow Police Department since March 2001 and was the first city officer ever killed in the line of duty. He had died by the time he arrived at a local hospital, Duke said.

The wounded officer, Latah County Sheriff's Deputy Brannon Jordon, was in serious condition with multiple gunshot wounds, Duke said.

Authorities did not release the name of the injured civilian, but said he lived in the neighborhood and had gone outside after hearing the gunshots. The man was undergoing surgery and was in stable condition.

Police said the gunman started shooting from a parking lot across from the Latah County Courthouse shortly after 11 p.m. Saturday. A hail of more than 30 bullets ripped through the county's emergency dispatch center, Duke said. Dispatchers were moved to a room in the jail area of the courthouse. Officers rushed out of the building.

"Whoever the shooter is wanted to draw people to the courthouse," Duke said. "When officers responded, he did open fire on them."

Newbill was the first officer at the scene of the shooting and was hit around 11:35 p.m. Saturday. Jordon, a 17-year veteran, was shot shortly after midnight as he tried to seek cover behind a tree after pulling Newbill out of the line of fire, Duke said.

The civilian was shot later, Duke said.

"He was just shooting at anybody he could," Duke said.

Four empty magazines were found outside the church. Duke initially estimated that 75 shots were fired, but later said it was not clear exactly how many shots the gunman fired.

Officers surrounded the church, which is across the street from the courthouse and nestled in a residential neighborhood near downtown and Moscow High School. A final shot was heard from inside the church about 1 a.m. Sunday, Duke said.

Streets in the area had been barricaded and residents had been told to stay inside their homes. Many residents told news media that they heard the spray of bullets, and some said they witnessed the shooting of the officers.

Moscow, a community of about 20,000 people that is home to the University of Idaho, is located 80 miles south of Spokane, Washington.

I live just north of Moscow and was shocked when I turned the tv on this morning to see this happening. I was even more ticked at the anchor on FOX news. The public affairs officer clearly stated in his interview that it was a semi-automatic rifle that the shooter used. But good ole Fox news anchor lady says the shooter used an automatic weapon. No, I'm not surprised she said it but it still ticks me off.

I hate it when they stretch the truth to fit there own agenda.---automatic assault rifle.:fire::fire::cuss::cuss::banghead::banghead:

My Jeep has a 4 speed automatic transmission. All I have to do is put it in gear and let the clutch pedal out and it automatically moves forward.

I don't think sheeple, let alone antis (or even Fudds) give two squats about calling it a semi auto or automatic.

They just see a whackjob has access to a firearm that can sling out 75 rounds in a few minutes--even if you get the nomeclature correct they don't typically drill down to those details.

Not defending it, just saying they don't care and it's as likely as not to be on purpose (it being on purpose would give the media types credit for doing enough reseach to have a hidden agenda).

On the otherhand, what the weapon was really isn't as important as the fact that the guy DID sling 75 bullets in a matter of minutes. Also important is the fact that regardless if it's semi or full auto, it shouldn't affect legal ownership of either.

So a semi can shoot almost as fast as a full-auto? So what. It shouldn't affect my ability to own either. I think this is another dialogue we need to hash out. Why should we feel the need to defend semi vs. full auto? Just because someone crashes through a crowd of people in a sedan doesn't make me evil for owning a sedan too. I agree though, that it would still be nice if the press would get the details of the weapons correct. I mean, it's like eye-in-the-sky reporting someone driving a "super-duper-high-speed-ultra-fast RED race car" when someone is trying to outrun cops in a stolen Hyundai Tiburon.

a pattern I keep noticing: shooter empties a lot of cartridges, very few people killed. If "assault rifles" are so dangerous, then why do these shootings not kill more people? I know that sounds cynical, and I don't mean to sound like I'm downplaying the innocent victims to becoming statistics. Still, whats the deal???

I thought it was strange that they called him a "sniper". His accuracy shouldn't even earn him the title of "hunter" or even "sperm donor".

I was listing to FAUX news today and two words jumped out at me.

Semi-Automatic and Sniper.

P Yamato, I guarantee my hit probability is increased by semi-auto rather than full auto. Unless it's Times Square on New Years. But then a real killer wouldn't use ANY firearm for maximum carnage. Joe

I still have trouble with the media's misrepresentations of semi vs. auto and the effectiveness thereof. My training was that automatic on an M-16 was to be used only under specific circumstances, like a "peel" maneuver for breaking contact or on the Final Protective Line. The reasoning was that "aimed fire is effective fire" and spray and pray was a waste of ammo unless your only purpose was to keep the enemy's head down. Yet, the press rails on about the "hail of 30 bullets". Heh, I just fired several "hails" at the range this afternoon, just a little more slowly and maybe aimed better than this guy because I hit my target every time. Effective rate of aimed fire with an AR = 12rds/min which = about 6 minutes + to get 75 rounds off.

Why do they think the military went to a three round burst on the A4? It's because automatic fire from an assault rifle is generally a waste of ammo after the third round. :banghead:

(We were taught to use trigger control to get a 3-5 round burst. I find it hard to believe that today's troops can't be taught the same thing...)

Meh, so what. The average person makes no distinction between semi-auto and automatic. After all, aren't self shucking pistols known as autos? Now, if she had said machine gun on the other hand.................................

As someone who is currently in the hospital where the victims were taken, I've been following this story since it broke. the Deputy Chief used the words automatic and semi automatic interchangably in his press conferences. reporters were begging people to "tell their story" while trying to tell the witnesses what they saw.

Officer Lee Newville is the first Moscow City Police Officer to die in the line of duty. I've had dealings with the man and found him to be a fair and decent cop.

how about some thoughts for the wife, childeren and other family and friends he left behind.

???

Bad run-on sentence, or did Dude#1 eat Dude#2? If that's the case, the "that's messed up" factor just jumped sky-high.

ETA: nevermind... I read further and figured out it was a bad sentence.

This is an unfortunate event and my thoughts/prayers/sympathy go out to all the families but its important to put a few things in perspective.

~100-130 people were killed today on our roads and there is nothing in MSM about it.

We have an undeclared war going on on our border between Mexico and the Drug/Crime Lords that is spilling over into the US and MSM isn't saying anything about it.

How many people have been affected by contaminated food products from China and the MSM isn't saying anything about it...or at least almost nothing.

We have a lot of issues that this country needs to address and these isolated incidents while tragic are not front page news nor are they a REAL problem for society.

I have to admit that it would appear that MSM has toned the rhetoric back a bit since VT due to the backlash/demand from people to stick to the facts and avoid the melodrama/speculation.

When in doubt don't hesitate to send an e-mail to a MSM outlet and remind them to stick to the facts or you'll turn them off and write their sponsors to tell them you are going to boycott them for a month for MSM's irresponsible reporting.

The only thing they listen to is the bottom line....keep voting with your dollars and we WILL be able to hold MSM's feet to the fire and keep them honest and reasonable unbiased (eventually).

A sniper sprayed dozens of bullets

ox·y·mo·ron
Pronunciation: "äk-sE-'mor-"än
Function: noun
: a combination of contradictory or incongruous words (as cruel kindness); broadly : something (as a concept) that is made up of contradictory or incongruous elements

That's nice and all, but honestly, what's the point?

It won't bring him back.

The issue is and always will be gun control when some oxygen thief lets loose on a crowd of people. IMO, it's best to focus on that, because it certainly CAN change. And not to our liking either.

I agree. was this a horrible event? yes. is it international newsworthy? no.

the media only covers what it wants to cover. when I get a chance I will be writing a open letter on our community forum about the way the media dealt with this event.

Any event on a slow news day will get lots of airtime. Gotta feed the 24 hour news beast.

Bingo! We have a winner.

Just got back from the PD, where I went through a whole stack of Officer Down printouts that had made their way to my inbox. We pass them around, read and initial them partly in honor of the guys who give their lives in the line of duty and partly to remind ourselves of what can go wrong with your day.

Sergeant Newbill's page is already up. (Sigh) So far in May, there have been 5 line of duty deaths due to gunfire. My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone of their families.

Curiously, none of the other four deaths got the national media coverage this one did. They must have happened when there were other things in the news.

The average non-gun owner doesn't know the difference between 'semi' and 'automatic'. Automatic Weapon sounds more intense than Semi-Automatic Rifle.

I highly suspect the media knows exactly what it's doing when they say that. You can notify them until your fingers lock up but it won't change their tactics for newsworthiness.
