More Automatic Assault Rifle Mayhem

Hope anyone in the Moscow area will let us know if anything new surfaces. Sure strange that more info. hasn't been released. Sounds like he definitely should not have had the guns.

i just wish the wack jobs would get the order right - kill yourself and THEN shoot at everyone else... sheesh.

J/Tharg!

The average non-gun owner doesn't know the difference between 'semi' and 'automatic'. Automatic Weapon sounds more intense than Semi-Automatic Rifle.

I highly suspect the media knows exactly what it's doing when they say that.

Maybe so, but before everybody started wetting all over themselves to be PC they typically called a self loader an automatic. Even Colt labeled their 45 pistol AUTOMATIC CALIBER 45.

Actually, that usage dates from the very early 1900's, when semiautos weren't that common. It's sloppy to use it now, particularly since the gun-control lobby is working hard to confuse people on the difference.

The phrase "automatic weapons" always refers to full-auto, though.

If I hear anything I'll keep this thread updated, I live ~ 15 minutes from Moscow via the back roads...

PS

If anyone in the area would like to help out:

Subject: Can you help?
Importance: High

IF YOU ARE ABLE, PLEASE PASS THIS MESSAGE ALONG TO OTHER CITIZENS, BUSINESSES, GROUPS OR ORGANIZATIONS IN OUR COMMUNITY. Thank you so much!

Are you interested in doing something to help local law enforcement during this difficult time? We could really use your help. Please pass this message along to your Church groups, Employers, Organizations, friends and family.

We are currently in the process of planning a time for fellowship following the memorial service this Friday for all law enforcement personnel and their families. It will be a private gathering held at the Hamilton Indoor Recreation Center (HIRC), and will provide an environment for those involved in this horrific event to be with one another following what is sure to be a deeply emotional and difficult service. This is a different event than the one happening in the Kibbie Dome following the service. This event is meant to help the law enforcement family to have some private time away from the spotlight.

Those attending this gathering will include the Moscow Police Department, the Latah County Sheriff's Office, Idaho State Patrol, and the Whitcom Dispatch. We are expecting upwards of 400 people and are asking members of our community to help us with food and beverages for this event. We are looking for all kinds of items, and would really appreciate any support you can give. We are trying to keep the responsibility of this gathering off of the shoulders of law enforcement and their families so that they can focus on beginning the healing process.

Please bring any offerings to the HIRC, located beside the Hamilton-Lowe Aquatic Center at F Street and Mountain View, between 2:30pm-3:00pm on Friday, May 25th. If other arrangements need to be made, please call me directly (contact info below). Thank you in advance for your generosity.

Please use only disposable containers (the Dollar Store is a great resource for this) with disposable serving spoons if possible.

If you have any questions, please call myself, Angela Carpenter, on my cell phone at (208) 669-1626.

Thank you again.

Sincerely,

Angela

BTW:

I was in the same area that day at about 5 PM, my coworkers were there at 7 PM and 10 PM...

I find it crazy and a bit scary that we were in that area before things went down...

Honestly, I'm not sure what we would have done if we where there when it happened.

Legally registered, legally purchased, fully automatic AK-47...

Idaho State Police investigators learned Tuesday that Hamilton, 36, had purchased the fully automatic AK-47 assault rifle from a federally licensed firearms dealer in Harvard, Idaho, in late 2004 or early 2005, before he was in trouble with the law, Assistant Moscow Police Chief David Duke told The Associated Press.

The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives field office in Spokane, was checking Wednesday whether paperwork the dealer filed was proper, Duke said.

The AK-47 was a stock automatic weapon and had not been modified, Duke said.

Julianne Marshall, a Bureau of Alcohol, Firearms, Tobacco and Explosives spokeswoman in Seattle, said she did not have information and could not comment on the Hamilton case.

But because the fully automatic AK47 is classified as a machine gun under the National Firearms Act, a purchaser would have to buy it from a registered seller or firearms dealer, pay a $200 tax to transfer the registration, and pass an ATF background check, she said.

The application of someone convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence would be rejected, she said. Also, the law requires a registered gun owner convicted of such a crime to transfer the gun to someone else.

Not good at all....

...and how is THIS supposed to be enforced?

If the weapon used was an UNMODIFIED automatic weapon (assault rifle, a real one), then the LEGAL purchase had to go through a Class 3 Dealer, and be approved by local police and those wonderful folks down there at BATFE.

Meanwhile, and knowing only wat I've heard in the way of news broadcasts, did or do the reporter(s) know and or care about the difference between a machinegun and a semi-automatic firearm?

Just look at all the ink that has been spilled in comment on "ASSAULT RIFLES", correctly, weapons capable of SELECTIVE FIRE, when what was actually involved was a SEMIAUTOMATIC FIREARM.

do they care.. well here it is from the Spokesman Review staff...

I know enough about weapons to know that being vague in stories (firearm, rifle, shotgun) is probably my best bet if I don't want to make a mistake! I am trying to learn more, however, now that I'm being called upon to do more crime reporting.

If it was a full auto legally owned and registered AK like the article in post #56 says, this actually may be why we haven't heard an out cry from the gun grabbers. The use of a legally owned and registered full-auto is a statistical anomaly that has only occurred 2 other times in over 70+ years (and one of those 2 times was a LEO officer). If gun grabbers tried to use this extremely rare incident as a vehicle to demand more gun control they would actually loose credibility in the eyes of many of their supporters because they would look like they are using any event they can (even statistically rare ones) as an excuse to ban gun ownership. Groups like the Brady Campaign trying to keep their base convinced their ultimate goal is to reduce crime and gun-control is a means to this end NOT the other was around.

Zen21Tao:

Your comment amounts to a pretty good read of/about the antics motives methods and goals of the anti gunners.

I might, re this, add just one point. From their own mouths, in any number of instances, the STATED goals of the anti gunners are THE TOTAL PROSCRIPTION OF FIREARMS. This is not based on what I say, rather it is based on what THEY have said, and repeated multiple times.

MD_Willington:
Re the "best bet" mentioned, being vague, I submit that that is a about the worst possible bet, assuming that the person you quoted seeks credability with people who know anything much about guns, and there are quite a lot who do. It isn't "rocket science", actually it is quite simple, and the facts are widely available, assuming that media types are interested in facts, as opposed to "wringing hands". All they need do is to look and or perhaps ask.

For example, Assault Weapons are properly defined as follows. Selective Fire weapons, usually of rifle configuration, chambered for intermediate power cartridges. See standard reference texts that deal with small arms, or check with the military. They mght also try britanica.com, which used to be free, but is now, as I recall, a subscription service. I would assume that a newspaper, of any size, could afford a subscription. Making "mistakes" of the sort mentioned is a lot less than acceptable, given the availability of real information, as opposed to tear jerking emotionalism, the speciality of some or many in media.

It would seem to me that when he was convicted of a crime that would require the forfeiture of his REGISTERED automatic weapon, they should have been able to do a quick search of the records and enforce his transfer of the weapon.

MD_Willington Yes, but they did not...

PS

Big memorial today in Moscow ID... I am unable to attend though.

Re the above posts, what have we here? It appears as if the minions of the law, or law enforcement, what ever became of Peace Officers, to use a polite phrase, dropped the ball. Obviously, this failure of public servants will require a significant diminishment in the rights of LAW ABIDING CITIZENS, all for their own good, of course, or for some conveniently unspecified greater good. I wonder as to when, if ever, the people of this country will awake to the baloney that is constantly thrown at them by their employees, the above mentioned forces of law enforcement and their elected things, among other baloney throwers.

Hmmm... I was wondering why the antis were so quiet.

Adding to what Zen21Tao said, maybe they're afraid this will prove total licensing and registration doesn't prevent crime? Especially since they'll need to convince the public otherwise for Feinstein's bill adding .50's to the NFA to go through.
