"all judges start out as lawyers."
True enough, I guess, but although I'm just taking a WAG at this, I suspect that most Supreme Court judges at least had *some* experience as a judge prior to their nomination.

Of the 118 former and current Justices, over 30 had no prior judicial experience. It's a common theme throughout history to occasionally nominate a non-judge (Rehnquest was never a judge) to bring fresh insight to the Court.

I appreciate the info as I was truly guessing. However, it appears that I guessed right. Only about a third had no experience. I wonder what the ratio would be in modern (1900 on up) times?

You really think GWB would pick someone who doesn't think like he does? That would make no sense.

In the first place, Bush isn't a conservative, nor does he think like a conservative. In the second, an absence of sence is in no way uncharacteristic of the Bush administration, which seems intent upon out-squandering even the Snopes Clinton régime.

That is my point. He will pick someone who thinks like he does. It will be people who really care less about our rights.
