I realize that most NFA takes a $200 tax stamp, but AOW's are a $5 stamp.

Besides a SBS, what falls under AOW? I'm assuming the requirements are the same regardless of the cost of the stamp (please, correct me if I'm wrong).

Hypothetically speaking, if I wanted a SBS, could I buy a shotgun from the factory that has never had a shoulder stock, and buy a short barrel as an AOW, or does it have to be a complete unit?

On an unrelated note, what is the requirement to get a pistol prepared for a suppressor (paperwork, approvals, etc)? What determines if it can/cannot take a suppressor? I realize these are newbie questions, but I'd like to buy everything I can before Billary takes office and outlaws magic markers as assault weapons.

Thanks, all.

Assuming your state allows it (some states allow all NFA, some allow only certain types, others allow none), and your CLEO will sign forms, here's the lowdown:

A shotgun which never had a stock but has a short barrel is an AOW. If you are buying one, it requires a Form 4 and a $5 transfer tax. If you are converting a shotgun into an AOW, it requires a Form 1 and a $200 making tax.

A shotgun which has EVER had a stock attached and has a short barrel is a SBS. If buying, a form 4 and a $200 transfer tax is required. If converting to SBS, a Form 1 and $200 is required.

The same goes for all other NFA weapons. The only exceptions are that transferring an AOW requires a $5 tax and no new Machineguns may be registered. All other transfers and builds require a $200 tax.

How this answers your question...

There are no regulations regarding the pistol. You can have the barrel threaded or otherwise modified to accept a suppressor any time you want. As such, you can have your registered suppressor set up to work on multiple firearms.

As far as making an AOW/SBS, if you are going to make it yourself, go ahead and register it as a SBS. The cost is the same ($200) and if at some later date you decide you want to add a shoulder stock, you can do so.

SBS != AOW.

AOW includes "smoothbore pistols" (barrel under 18"), which could be built on a shotgun-type platform. A SBS has, or at some point had, a stock.

Be veeeery careful about NFA terminology.

AOW also includes anything else that cannot readily be identified as a "gun", either by common recognition or by legal definition. An AR15 Pistol with a forward vertical grip permanently attached is an AOW (as it evades the federal definition of a pistol having exactly _one_ vertical grip). Guns built into disguised forms are also AOWs, such as "pen guns", "belt buckle guns", "flashlight guns", etc.

Hypothetically speaking,
Knowing what you have in mind (as opposed to, legalistically, what you wrote), yes you could - so long as you do the appropriate manufacturing paperwork, which IIRC is $200 (not $5). It's a lot cheaper and easier to just buy one (may I suggest the Mossberg 590 Mariner AOW, or Serbu Super Shortie?). The problem you face is transitioning from "innocent" platform to NFA, which amounts to "manufacture".

Nothing. Just get a threaded barrel and slap it on there, or thread the one you've got.

Your jurisdiction may vary. Importation of threaded barrels is restricted (ticking me off, as I want a suppressed Steyr Scout).

Go do a search for Bardwell's "NFA FAQ", and read it. That is THE starting place for NFA newbies.

Well, thanks for clearing that up. I post on too many BB's and have either been misinformed or confused in the past, so I'm glad to have this matter taken care of.

Now if only I had the money for new toys.....
