Found a Mosin M44, not sure what country of origin (Russian, Hungarian, etc.) or whether the parts match (not sure how to check).

For an excellent condition M44, what's a good price? What's the going rate?

Also, how much for 7.62x54R ammo, say 1000 rds?

This one caught me totally off guard. I was looking for something completely different to plan for a purchase in the future, and I stumbled on this baby. I had to run b/c I didn't really have time to stop in there & I had to pick up my wife, but I had to peel myself away from it to pick her up. I'm debating going back and buying it. I had been wanting a 91/30, but I'm leaning toward getting that M44.

M44s are crowd pleasers. Lotsa noise, lotsa muzzle flash, lotsa fun. :D

Going rate would be anywhere between $60 and $150. I paid ~$90 for mine in very good condition.

Right now, going price for 7.62x54R is 880rds for ~$100, if you shop online. That's for possibly corrosive milsurp.

In my area(DFW,TX) $75-$150. What is it worth to you? Like it, buy it.
They won't get any cheaper than they are now. One day we'll kick ourselves for passing up good ones.

Very tough to answer without more info. hardwood/laminated ? Condition of markings ? A lot of variables there. They are selling for $150 at my local Gander Mtn., and they aren't in great shape. http://www.classicarms.us/htm/firearms.htm has nice ones for a decent price

As for the ammo part of your question though, for 1000 rounds.. depends on what you want it for, but I'll assume good 'ol surplus type shootin'
http://www.ammoman.com lists
$390 Wolf FMJ ($195 -500)
$395 Olympic 180g FMJ Berdan primed -Greece ($79 -200)

Cheaperthandirt does have the Hungarian Light Ball 440 Rd TinCan Corrosive for $69.97 + ship

Not possibly corrosive though, definitely corrosive !

Classicarms.us again has a 1200rd Case of Bulgarian milsurp for $140

$100 in like new condition with sling and cleaning kit at northern Georgia gun shows.

I get some wholesale catalogs, and it looks like they sell for $60-$70 in quantity 1 at wholesale. The dealer that sells them for $100 usually brings two arsenal crates (probably about 20 rifles per crate) and sells both crates in a weekend! I'm sure he pays less than $60 per rifle.

A few years ago, a local pawn shop was selling them for as low as $75, but they were only fair-good condition.

The last purchase of ammo for my Mosin's was a while back. I bought 880 rounds of 7.62 X 54R for about $83.xx. I have not opened it yet. It is in a large sardine type can. I have several different Mosin's. I shoot my M38 more that the reast. I have learned it, am fairly accurate w/ it

Big 5 has the M44 on sale for $79.00 this week and they have quite a selection. I picked up a 91/30 last week and will probably get the M44 tomorrow.

I've bought all mine for under $80 for laminated stocks. They definately draw attention. I went out to the range with it the other day and knew as soon as I fired my first shot, mayhem would ensue. The first comment I heard was a guy saying "Was that you?!??!?" to his buddy. Then another guy goes "someone's shooting an elephant gun"...then they finally figured out where it was coming from and came over to look at it. They were impressed with my 2-3" groups @ 50m on irons.

I've been buying 440 rd tins of hungarian 147 gr light ball from Aimsurplus for $40. I need to buy some more though...I always get paranoid the milsurp will dry up. It's nice ammo though. Clean burning for corrosive ammo, sealed neck and primer. Can't complain!

Damn...they raised the price up $10??!?!?

Probably one of my most favorite guns to shoot for sure.

If you like it, buy it. Just take a look at the bore first to make sure it isn't worn out. You aren't going to find a better value in rifles or ammo.

BTW the Hungarian ammo is the way to go. I'm burning my way through my 3rd tin of the year with disturbing quickness.
