I don't know why people say the MN recoils so bad. I can shoot heavy ball for 2 hours with no ill effects. (not trying to sound macho) If it bothers you just get a slip on pad, they are already ugly as all get out.
To me a Mosin M44 kicks less than the longer version 91/30. Mosins are not enjoyable to shoot benchresting too much but are better suited to shooting standing up. Make sure that the pocket of your shoulder is square to the buttplate and firm against it. The boom from a 44 makes it seem a bigger kicker. BTW the last M44 I shot was hitting clay pidgeons at 100 yards in the standing (unbelieveable I know) I shot one and the other guy shot two in a row for what it's worth.
