A couple of years ago I bought a spam can of Bulgarian yellow tip ammo for my mosin rifle is this ammo corrosive? Is it safe to shoot in my rifle I have a M44 thanks:confused:

It should be safe to shoot, and it should be corrosive as well. All you have to do (after shooting), is spray some windex down the barrel, or hot water.

This will neutralize the corrosive bits, keeping your M44 rust free.

SATX:
Have used it for over a year. Such cleaning with Windex followed by drying, once home, has left both bores of my MN 44s still as shiny as when they were bought. This includes having been exposed to fairly high Memphis spring/summer humidity for over an hour at numerous times during shooting/driving back.

The cheap new Remington .22 LR has caused gas blowbacks sometimes once in every five rounds in the old Savage.
With this old Bulgarian ammo, only once in over 700 rds, and it was mild. Just wear shooting glasses, but these guns are rugged.

Perfectly good ammo. Shoot it and enjoy. And yes, it is corrosive, but flush the bore out with hot water to dissolve the corrosive primer residue, then clean as normal.

I once had a spam can where some of the ancient cartridges had weird creases in some of the brass. While I did shoot those at the time, in retrospect, I should have been more careful. If you see any like that with deformation, pick through the whole lot and take those funky rounds to the dump.

i had some surplus i shot out of my mosin back home that i think might have been bulgarian... i think most milsurp ammo for the mosin you can count on being corrosive unless it says otherwise.

what i do is real hot water, followed up by a normal cleaning. i break the bolt all the way down and hot water it too. thought i cleaned it good enough the first time, but a few days later it would barely even cycle because of the build up inside the bolt. still no big deal, just broke it down, got the stuff off with a brillo pad and it was good as new. enjoy!

+1 on the windex suggestion. Whenever I take one of my many surplus rifles or pistols to the range, the bottle of windex comes with me. I squirt the bore and "innards" liberally and the let all the gunk drip out the barrel and I'm cleaning up my other equipment/policing up spent brass. Once home, they get cleaned as usual. I have been doing this for almost 20 years with good results.

The windex deal is only a temporary salts diluting method to go from range to home, until the rifle can be properly cleaned and oiled.
It's easier to carry than hot water.

Don't forget to clean the firing pin and bolt face. Many people forget that the firing pin stabs directly into the primer and often gets a good dose of corrosive material from it.
