Well I just picked up a 91/30 Mosin Nagant and was testing it at an indoor range. After I fired about 25 rounds, the threaded part of the cleaning rod broke off in the stock. The rifle was pretty darn hot so that might have had something to do with it.

Arrrgh.

I have not tried to get the stuck part out yet. But I noticed it as I was shooting, I would bring the rifle to a 45 degree angle with the butt resting on my lap to load more ammo in it. And I hear the rod going back in with a clanging sound as I bring the rifle to a more vertical position.

Had you inspected the condition of the rod before firing it? I'd imagine it was one of those things just waiting to happen.

The rod looked in ok condition. I even used it to clean the barrel before hand. When I look at the stock, the rear barrel band seems to have shifted from its initial position too.

A silly question--but have you disassembled the rifle yet? You should see if the nut comes out freely, in which case the rod was never actually broken. If the rod has snapped off, the nut will be stuck.

I have the stock separated from the rest of the rifle. I don't know what this nut you are talking about is though.

Here's the exploded diagram.

The part I'm referring to is No. 12. If you look at the barrel channel on the inside, it will appear to be a smooth piece of steel. That's the top of it. If it pops out, then your rod may not be broken after all. If it's locked in place, then the stub of the rod is screwed into it. The top is threaded to aid in removal. I can't remember for certain, but I think the threads are the same as the main bolts, so you can use one to remove it.

Wait, no I'm wrong. It's the NOSE CAP SCREW that has the same thread as the cleaning rod retaining nut.

I got the cleaning rod nut out and yes I do see the broken piece inside. I was able to use some pliers to get the broken threads out. The rod still has about 1.5 threads remaining and it does screw in just enough to hold it on.
