Mosin or Enfield sporter for all your short-range deer needs?

At short range, why scope it unless yer needing corrective lenses, then by all means do so. You can put a low power'd long eye relife scope on both rifles, easy enough for 100 yards, for sure. Not any more expensive than a regular scope, and one that attaches at the rear sight base is very easy to install, with out machining or drilling.
Comes down to preference I guess......what do you have at hand?
Both shoot a .311 bullet at about the same speed, the deer wont notice the difference at 100 yards :D

Similar to, but not exactly like mine. I went with a scout scope mount and an FAL flash supressor, (never know when you might hafta bayonet one of those tiny Georgia deer.)

Wow, I just checked out that Williams online store and there are lots of solid surplus rifles, sporterized and not, under $200. Carcano, Arisaka, Mauser, Enfield, Steyr, etc. Not a bad option, wish I lived closer.

I like Lee-Enfields, and would only take a M-N if given one. Easy choice. :)

+1 on the Ishapore in .308. Otherwise, get the Mosin.

I have a red dot on my M-44 on a scout mount.

Not really digging the red dot, so I just ordered a 2-7x 25 long eye relief scope and see through rings. Leavng the front site post in place, this set up should suit pretty much every need I can thinnk of. Red dot is getting swapped to my shotgun.
