Has anybody seen one of these or shot one? Whats the point of the "can"? Does it act as a silencer or just look cool?

The Mossberg press release says:

"Key features that set
this model apart are a barrel heat-shield and a unique, solid aluminum, ported muzzle
stabilizer, which not only reduces recoil and muzzle jump but comes drilled and tapped
to accept the Mossberg Picatinny rail system, thus allowing the operator to attach an
assortment of aftermarket lighting or aiming devices."

Not a suppressor, just looks like one. Should find a ready market with young guys that have a burning desire to "look cool".

Marketing genius. Of no real value, but will sell guns.

Conveniently released after "No Country For Old Men" came out. Its just a marketing gimmick. I suspect we'll be getting a lot of those barrels sent in to us for rework/de-gheying after the Kool-Aid wears off and people realize they have a foot long piece of aluminum hanging off the front of their shotgun :D

I went to the Dixie Gun Show in Raleigh and bought one within 3 minutes of looking at it. The non-functional recoil tip that is being somewhat dismissed here is intimidating to the home invader working his way to the second floor bedrooms of my house. It brings an "Oh Crap' factor that could cause him to hesitate. This gun is all about one thing.........home invasion.

I bought this pump shot gun for two reasons:

- The unmistakable sound of a 12 guage being cocked at 3:30AM while home invader is working his way up my hallway to the heavily armed bedrooms. This sound alone should send the invader back the way he came without a shot fired.

- The "Oh Crap" factor of this wonderful shotgun being drawn down on the bad guy. The looks alone of this gun being cocked and aimed might be enough to send bad guy into retreat or surrendor without firing a shot. This is why I bought this gun, to not shoot it at another human being unless he took that second step or raised his weapon.

- The accessory rail allowed me to bolt on a 275 Lumen Cree LED flashlight with two 1" Weaver rings. The Cree LED Xlamp or higher is capable of lighting up a room or blinding anyone who I pointed the gun at.

I have shot the gun several times and love it. I've disinegrated cinderblocks with slugs and pumpkins with shells. God help the sorry son of a gun who enters my home with harm on his mind because he will meet my Mossberg 500 Rolling Thunder.

Bottom line for the gun maker ...... money, and having something new and different, well , that makes money. So the goal was reached.

I think it's just there for comic relief. If you want one, buy one but don't get upset if some laughs in your face about it.

Nothing with that many holes in it can actually look like a silencer. Unless you have never seen a silencer before.

Hmmm... might be a little more dumb@ss looking than the "Road Blocker" even. Mossberg has really begun to embarrass themselves with this crap.

But I also happen to think that a "Breaching" attachment makes a shotgun look like a wannabe, OpUrAtOr's toy so what do I know?

BEING COOL is the point i guess

For shame, too. Even Remington has released some goofy "tactical" models of the 870 that have a PGO stock. It's embarrassing, but I guess you have to do what you have to do in order to draw sales.

Haha you got to be kidding me. This is clearly targeted to the "tacticool" mall ninja type. They even use the key work "operator".

One thing I have to say is; if you can use this gun for it's intended purpose properly, the more power to you. Just because I think it's a bit of a joke doesn't mean it's not a fully functioning firearm. I don't want to seem like I want them destroyed, but when I see guns like that I find them to be more of a show piece rather than the gun someone actually brings to the range or the woods.

So, you got it to intimidate them off the looks, only to blind them first?

All these cockamamie configurations Mossberg has put out lately do not impress me.
Pushing the pistol gripped shotgun for home defense, makes me grind my teeth.
The ignorant think they look all tacti'cool.

Mossberg has finally pulled their collective head out into the sunshine on one thing tho... The Flex System.

Nah, they just popped up for air... then they stuck it right back in.

This is some very high quality trolling from 3 years ago. I'm sorry it took so long for a masterpiece like this to be unearthed and appreciated.

Check it out, it hits several of the "shotgun controversy" highpoints:

- Racking the pump to 'scare off the intruder'
- The tacticool 'scare factor'
- He mentions he's only shot it "a few times"
- Accessory rails and mall ninja-like training (shooting at pumpkins and cinder blocks?)

The short of it is that a one-time poster three years ago was trolling the shotgun forum. No doubt an inside job.

If I were to run this troll, I would have thrown in something about the devastating effects of birdshot up close, a chainsaw handlegrip, and maybe something about load order, like bird-bird-buck-slug, along with a complicated deployment plan.

Roll all those elements into one post, and that should get people polarized and fighting amongst one another!

I'll take my single shot any day over any of that "tacti-cool" or whatever that crap is called.

After all, if it's done right, one shell should be all you need in most situations...

Am I the only one who wonders if they chose the name to appeal to my generation. What's next Tet commerative AK-47?

As to the gun in question. Does it work any better than any other shotgun? Likely not, just good old marketing hype.

"No Country For Old Men" was an entertaining movie, but it doesn't mean that I want to buy a pneumatic captive piston gun either.
