I saw an ad for one of these with a turkey/waterfowl combo. I've been looking for a turkey gun ever since my wife told me to get one and it would be a Christmas present from her. The turkey barrel is 22" with fiber optics and a red dot mounted on it. I've never heard much about the 535. I've done some searching on here but nobody seems to have given it much of a review. I already have an 870 Express Super Magnum that I used last year for turkey but with a 28" barrel it's a pain to haul in the woods. I've also thought about getting my 870 configured to use as a turkey gun but then thought for about the same price I could get a new gun with 2 barrels and a set of chokes in the configuration I want. I know that 3 1/2" shells aren't necessary for hunting but I've used them in the past and still have a few boxes laying around that I plan on using this spring. Any opinions or suggestions about what I should do and how the 535 is would be appreciated. I'm trying to keep this "turkey" gun to around $300.

Would I do it again, probably not.... If I had to do it all over again, I would probably lean toward the 835 instead of the 535, it is heavier and has the over-bored barrel.
That being said, you already have the best kind of turkey gun there is, "ONE THAT'S ALREADY PAID FOR".
Take the money you would spend on a new gun and work on patterns and chokes combinations with your current gun and you'll be surprised that you won't get THAT MUCH of a performance advatage from a "Turkey Gun"...
If you need to upgrade, look at autoloaders.....

Why would you care if the gun is "overbored"?

Seems to me that this is a gimmick to sell new choke tubes to people who already have a set. Either it does nothing, or if it does have an effect, it will be to reduce velocity for a given load. At worst, it could cause blow-by past the wad.

You can't use slugs in the 535? They make a turkey/deer combo with a slug barrel.

You can shoot slugs out of a 535, but not an 835. The 835 has an overbored bbl., and the slug would not have adequate support going down the bore. You can buy a slug bbl. for the 835, but the 535 and 500 models will shoot slugs and shot from the same bbl.

I have the 535 in the turkey/waterfowl combo. Have not used it on turkeys yet but have on waterfowl. I like the gun, works just like a Mossberg (solidly dependable), and it is a light gun which is a good thing if you haul it through the woods. It is actually the one of the lightest guns in its class (6.9 lbs if memory serves me right). I do not have the "deer" barrel yet but would buy one eventually.
Get the 535, I am pretty sure you will like it!

My friend has an 835.
Shooting the same 1oz load he gets more pellets onto a paper plate and modified choke than I get with an extra full choke in my 500.

Should someone get it over a standard bore?
Sure, if they need tight patterns.
Does it reduce velocity?
I don't know, we don't have chronos...but my suspicion is no.
I apologize, I read the post backwards the first time. I know the 3 1/2" shells will kick like no other but has anyone shot the shells out of the 535 and how does it compare to shooting the shells out of any other gun. I gues the only fear that I have is that since it is a light gun that it will have higher recoil than that of an equivalent gun with at steel receiver.

I am looking at the same gun, even though I only plan on using 3" shells the possibility of 3 1/2" is nice. Also you get fiber optic sights on both barrels at a reasonable cost.

WRT velocity, if you have a given powder charge in a larger barrel, it does tend to lower the velocity. How much is another question.

Yup, it was before turkey season.
My friend also uses the gun for ducks and deer. It sure does a number on deer with just an improved cylinder choke.
I personally wouldn't get an overbored shotgun unless for some reason I saw myself exclusively using it for turkey or deer with buckshot.
As for the velocity...I dunno. With extremely fast burning shotgun powders the bore volume might not matter too much.
It'd be interesting to know.
