I want to purchase a Mossberg 12 gauge pump shotgun with 18.5" barrel and ghost ring sights for self defense. I would prefer the 590 for the lighter barrel because I am not going to be banging it against metal bulkheads, but it doesn't look like Mossberg offers a model in the configuration I want unless I go with the 590A1.

Are the barrels interchangeable and does Mossberg even sell a lighter barrel with a front ghost ring sight? I don't see one on their website. Also does anyone know how much the weight difference between the 2 barrels actually is? I'm a little confused because according to their site the 590A1 model I'm looking at is listed as lighter than the 590 with similar features. That can't be right...

Well I can;t help you with the question if Mossberg makes any barrels with ghost ring in light contour that will interchange. I can tell you my 18.5 M590A1 is not what I would call a heavy gun. Fully loaded with 6 Hornady Critical Defense 00 buck and 4 Remington 00 buck in the stock side saddle weighs 7.9 pounds. The barrel, by itself weighs 2.35 pounds.

They used to sell a 590 with a ghost ring sight setup but not in 18.5". Not to my knowledge. But they've made a million variants.

It will likely cost you less money to sell your 590 and buy the 590A1. Barrels can be quite expensive. Also the rear ghost ring sights are quite expensive.

I basically did what you are describing and it cost me more money. Mine was the 20" model barrel.

The 590 and 590A1 are identical other than the thicker barrel, metal trigger guard and safety. The Barrels are interchangeable. Mossberg only sells the 590 with ghost rings in 20 inch barrel. If you what ghost rings and 18.5 inch barrel you will have to settle for the heavier 590A1 or the 500SPX. The 590A1 is definitely heavier so the weights listed on the Mossberg website seem wrong.

You are smart to avoid the unnecessarily heavy 590A1 barrel, and that's coming from a guy who owns one!

what you might do is reconsider ghost ring sights. I've tried them and find them distracting. I prefer a plain bead.
I find ghost rings work well for self defense situations but are horrible for trap. One day I did a side by side comparison. Foe me, bead for hunting and clay shooting and if it's also a home defense gun. If I have a shotgun dedicated for home defense, I like ghost rings. I could also see going to a red dot sight as well.
