I was wondering if anyone out there can give me any experiential information concerning Mossberg slug barrels, specifically the 24 inch, fully rifled type—group size, ammo used, etc.?

Thanks,
Luke

Luke:
i have a Mossberg, but with the short [18-1/2"] smooth cylinder bored barrel. For me, the PMC brand 2-3/4" rifled slugs work best. For your rifled barrel, [generally speaking] the sabot slugs will be better. Buy a 5 or 10 round box of all the different makes of sabot slugs you can find, and try them all aout.

Finding the 'best' slug for YOUR shotty is like finding the best .22LR round for YOUR rifle..ya gotta try 'em all.

Thanks Foghorn,

I know all about how slugs work in different barrels and how each gun will have its own particular taste. I was asking because I've got the opportunity to purchase the above barrel, and I was wondering what other people's experience with the Mossberg barrels were. I figured while I was at it, I might as well find out what kind of ammo they were having luck with. That way I can start with what people are having luck with, and then move on to other stuff only if that stuff doesn't work--hopfully, saving myself some money as everyone knows sabots are not cheap.

Luke, there's really not much one can shortcut on this, sorry.

A fully rifled barrel will ALMOST always do best with a sabot style slug, but only Heaven knows which sabot will work BEST in a given shotgun.

Were I starting out with a fully rifled barrel, I'd probably get some Lightfields and those Remington copper solids for starters, and go with the tightest grouping.

Realistically, any slug that groups into 6" or so under field conditions and from field positions is OK at that range.

Yes, I realize there aren't many shortcuts you can really take for finding the best slug for a specific gun; however at $10 a box or whatever, I'll take any shortcut, not matter how slight I can find. And starting with slugs people have had success with in a similar barrel is a very good place for starters.

I don't want to sound arrogant, but I want reiterate that the main reason for my original post was to find out how other people liked their mossberg barrels because I had the opportunity to get one at a very good price. I live in a hotspot when it comes to shotgun slug hunting (slugs are all we can use for deer in IA); I've hunted with slugs all my life--smooth bores, rifled chokes, and fully rifled. So believe me I know all about the stinking limitations of shotgun slugs. :)

For me personally, I like to have groups at or under 4" at 100 yards from a bench before I use it for hunting applications. However, I prefer to get one that groups like my friend has; it does the clover leaf at 100 yards (Ithica pump--fully rifled--federal sabots).

Luke,
I think I just may know that person with the Ithaca that coverleafs em'....:D When are you going to break down and come on over to the dark side.....you know you have if you expect continue hunting with us. You can't expect us Ithaca shooters to hang out with a lowly Mossy barreled 870 can you?
On the serious side, know that you already bought it. Try the barnes expanders. You saw the performance first hand. What more can you ask for? And now that you have your barrel picked out when are you going to dig me up that hastings.
Anyway, hope it works out for ya.
Catch ya on email early next week for an update on the Nebraska trip.

Hey good to hear from you Matt.

Sorry, I'm happy where I'm at. You're just jealous of my boat paddle.
:) At least I haven't missed a crow at <20 ft with it.

Oh, speaking of my boat paddle, I'm thinking of refinishing the whole thing: stock & steel. Certainly, I can't make it look any uglier.

Yes, those Barnes Expanders are amazing. For those of you who have never seen them do their work, three words suffice: big, hole, & blood.
