I know that this is an old thread but I am going to put my 2 cents in just in case it is helpful to someone else.
I have hunted with the same group of guys since high school and I'm now 65 years old. We did lose one of our group in Viet nam but there are still 5 of us who remain. Every year we go to New Jersey and Maryland to hunt together as two members of our group have access to large family farms in those states and we get free rooms although we provide the food for great meals while there.
All five of us have more than one designated slug gun. We each own and use scoped 12 Ga. H&R UltraSlug guns because over the years, we have each built rather comfortable stands to hunt from on both farms we hunt and the H&R UltraSlug guns are by far the best distance slug guns on the market for under $2,500.00. All of our UltraSlug guns will shoot 2 to 2 1/2" groups at 100 yds from sandbagged bench rests. If there is a trick to accurate slug gun shooting it is to find the sabot slug your rifled slug gun likes best. My Ultraslug and one other UltraSlug in the group prefer the 2 3/4" Lightfield Hybrid Exp slug while the 2 3/4" 1 oz. untipped Federal Barnes Expander is prefered by the other 3 UltraSlug Guns in the group. I also own an Ithaca Deerslayer III and it is almost as accurate as my UltraSlug but not quite. Another member of our group has a Savage 210 bolt gun which is reasonably accurate but has consistent ejection problems even thought it has been back to savage to have these problems fixed; consequently, he uses it more or less as a single shot. Another has a Mossberg bolt gun (not sure of the model number) and that is accurate as well. I believe the other two have a remington 870 and an 11-87 - both of which are accurate. Out to 100 yds all of these guns will do the job and do it well. Beyond 100 yds my money is on the 12 Ga. H&R UltraSlug. My farthest kill was last year with a ranged 148 yd shot. The 6 point dropped less than 15 feet from where he was hit. Spend lots of time at the range and know how you gun/slug combination hits at 50 yds, 100 yds, and 150 yds. Personally, I would not take a shot beyond 150 yds because (1) wind has too much effect on the slugs, (2) my eyes are too old now, and (3) the probability of a sure and quick kill is much less beyond 150 yds than it is at under 150 yds. . . . but that is just me.
