Mounts for Remington 700

After many years of dreaming, I finally purchased a new Remington 700 Police which I plan to use mainly for puching holes in paper at the 200-600 yard range. I stretched the budget to include a Timney trigger and I already have a Harris bipod that I plan to mount it on. My next task is to choose some mounting hardware for optics. I ultimately want a high-end Leupold but the budget won't stretch that far right now so I plan to just use an old Tasco 3-9x40. My question is, what sort of optics base should I use? Is there any good reason to go out and buy a top grade picatinny rail and if not, what sort of bases should I get? What I really want is a long term solution, something rock solid that I can just install and forget about and which won't cause problems some point down the road. Cost isn't as important to me as reliability and durability.

I put a Near Manufacturing 20 MOA base on a 700, and was extremely impressed with the quality and workmanship of the base. While not inexpensive, you definitely get what you pay for.

Other brands to consider are Nightforce and Leupold Mark 4 series.

Talley. But it really doesn't matter much until you replace that Tasco. There is quality, lifetime warranty glass out there for not much, but not Tasco!

id opt for a standard one piece base for leupold/redfield style rings. there plent stout enough and allow you to get your windage close so you can center the windage adjustment in your scope.

I have the M700 Police in .308 Win. Believe me when I say that the rifle itself, is not the expensive part of the package...it is merely the beginning. The total additional cost for a good M1913 base, rings and scope can easily run double the cost of the original rifle.

For bases, I suggest either Farrell base with 20 MOA offset. Here is a link:

For rings, I would go either Leupold Mark 4, or Nightforce steel.

There are a lot of good picatinny rails available for the M700. Most of my rifles wear Badgers, but they are somewhat expensive. Aside from the others mentioned in previous posts, here is another one to look at:

I would highly recommend that whatever rail you end up going with, that you get one with a 20MOA incline built into it. I was in your situation once after buying a precision rifle and not having a lot of $$$ leftover for the Leupold scope that I wanted. I ended up buying the Bushnell 10x40 mildot scope for about $160 to serve until I had more money for the Leupold. It is a good scope for the $$$.

Thanks gents - I'm pretty sure that I'm going to go with the Badger Ordinance although the Leupold Mark 4 gets excellent reviews as well. If I'm going to go for a Leupold scope, will I have any dramas if I use another brand of bases and/or rings?

Nope, no drama. My Leupold sits in Badger rings just fine.

Definitely get a Picatinny rail with some elevation adjustment. Assuming that your tasco has at least 40 MOA of internal adjustment, get a base with 20 MOA of adjustment. There are plenty of models out there.

When the time comes to get a new scope look at the Leupolds, but also look at the Zeiss Conquest. For those ranges, be sure to get something with paralax adjustment.
