I'm moving to Erwin soon, so I would imagine my NC CHP will no longer be valid (since NC doesn't do non-res, and I'll no longer be a resident), so I'm gonna have to get my TN permit.

What I find a little vague is "When your application is processed at the Driver Service Center, you will be given instructions on being fingerprinted." Could someone shed elaborate on this a little bit? The above quote is all the information handgunlaw.us gives.

Can anyone recommend where to take the CCW class?

Also, how do I go about buying handguns? Here in NC, non-CHP holders have to get a Jim Crow purchase permit. However, since I have my CHP I simply pick it out, fill out the 4473, hand my DL and CHP over with the money so he/she can fill out the back. Is it that simple in TN as well?

Is Unicoi County Title II friendly (CLEO signoff)?

I lived in TN about 10 yrs. ago and the process was, you take the training, once you get the certification you have completed the training you had to make an appt. at a drivers license office which did finger printing and photographs. I lived in Claiborne county and ended up driving to the drivers license office near Oak Ridge for the finger printing and photo.

Once you have the permit when you renew you can go to your local drivers license office for that.

It's been 7 years since I got mine so I have forgotten a lot about the procedure. Plus, I'm sure things have changed also. However, TN has a carry permit not a conceal cary permit. You do not have to conceal you handgun here.
What in the world made you choose Erwin, the last time I drove through there I would have missed it if I would have blinked.

I work graveyard shift, and have a two year old daughter. My wife wasn't very interested in being a mother or homemaker, so she barely did either one until she decided to leave. I moved back in with Mom so that my baby girl would be properly cared for while I was gone at night and asleep during the day.

This is not the first time my wife and I have been separated. The first time I'd leave work, get home, take a shower and go to sleep. When I woke up, I came out to Mama's, ate supper with my baby girl, and spent time with her till I put her to bed and went to work. Just made more since to move in.

Mom chose Erwin because housing is cheaper than it is here in Asheville. Its also closer to the company her husband drives for.

Oh, I kinda like being in the middle of nowhere. At the moment I live in the city, and I hate it.

They do everything at the driver's license office except the fingerprints. You get a paper at the there that gives you locations for fingerprinting. Oddly enough, I did mine at one of the local temporary staffing agencies. It was all electronic - no ink. There was no charge there. A few weeks later my permit arived in the mail.

Unaka Rod and Gun club in Johnson City has classses a couple of times a month on Saturdays.

You don't need a permit to purchase handguns in TN. Just complete the background check form, wait for it to clear and make your purchase. Very little red tape compared to some places I have lived.

Welcome to E. TN.

I'm not sure if your NC permit would no longer be valid....

according to the first page of http://www.handgunlaw.us/states/tennessee.pdf they honor non-resident permits, and TN and NC have reciprocity. The question is, will NC still consider your permit valid after you no longer live there.

INAL though, so you'll have to check and be sure. You can email the NC AG to get the answer in writing, but they take about 1.5 months to respond.

Let me know how it goes though, we're strongly moving from Charlotte to TN in the next couple of months (pending a job offer) and may be going through the same process ourselves.

If I had the sense and the time I would have got my FL permit to avoid this - you may want to look into that.

From what I understand, it's somewhat less expensive for the state to contract to private agencies for the collection of fingerprints. I got mine done at a private investigator's office in Kingsport. When you pay for all the paperwork at the DMV, they give you a date/time you can call certain locations and schedule your fingerprinting.

For CCW classes, I would highly recommend my shooting club: Cherokee Rod & Gun. They usually have a class once a month or so. Enjoyable and a great shooting range. I joined after I took my class.

IIRC, I think you have around six months in TN before you're considered a resident (unless you change your stuff over sooner), but I'm not sure how that affects a handgun permit. Remember that you need one for both open AND concealed carry, though.

For purchasing a weapon, you have to have proof of residence if you don't have a driver's license with your current address on it. Some stores around here won't sell to out-of-state customers. However, once you have your D/L, it's as simple as providing the necessary information, waiting a few minutes for the B/G check to clear over the phone, then you're good to go!

Welcome to the area!

Not far from Erwin, in Johnson City... http://www.etsu.edu/etsu/news/20000003.htm

My wife got took her class there...I went along for the ride (already had mine)

That page is very old...and the phone number may or may not be up to date... I have Paul Andersons card at home though, its got his home phone number on it.

PM me if you're interested...but it will be a few days before I get home, I'm in Gillette, WY...(OTR truck driver)

Cherokee Rod & Gun is another good option...when you take the class (either of them), they will answer all your questions about fingerprints.
