I read in a gun rag about something I believe to be call a Mule Leg...it is a shortened, from the factory, lever action rifle...are any of you familar with what I am talking about...if so is the a website...it looked similar to the rifle that Steve McQueen carried in Wanted: Dead or Alive...thanks guys

I would venture that if you bought a new lever gun, had a 'smith chop and channel the gun and re-attach the sights, plus paying the $200 NFA tax you would be close to the $1495 for their new model.

Yes I mean the pistol things...sorry it took so long to reply been out and about since 5 this morning

Well, if you're willing to go with a Rossi or EMF levergun (go with a '92 like the original. :) ) that's what.. last I looked 350-ish, so lets assume inflation and say 400. Tax is another 200, as mentioned. Cutting, recrowning, and dovetailing the barrel shouldn't be that much, and all the rest is comparatively simple work any relatively handy person could do.. cutting the mag tube and resetting the cap, prolly clipping the spring a touch, and taking a hacksaw to the stock. Hardest thing would be making a new buttplate from mild steel or suchlike, and even that you could prolly skip on.

I'd say you could have a decent Mare's Leg for about half what that feller's asking, if you're willing to do a little work on your own.
