Muzzle brake through-bore?

Going to run a couple muzzle brakes tomorrow, but not sure on an ideal through-bore. Only guns with brakes I have on hand are AKs, and slant brakes are a whole other ball game.

I'm thinking for a short brake, on a properly threaded barrel, +0.0100" should be fine, right? So for my AR, .234" or an A. Am I way off on that, or right on?

Thinking the tighter the through-bore, the more efficient the brake, or am I wrong? Trying to get as close to zero recoil as possible to help cure a friend's wife of her fear of centerfire rifles. Plus I'm bored and want to make some stuff.

In a perfect world you could get by with 0.010 over but small errors in alignment could cause a bullet strike so go with at least 0.020 over.

I have used .012 to.015 with very good reduction in felt recoil.

A friend of mine had a 44mag with a comp on it from a certain double action custom shop. I was admiring it one day and noticed that there was a wrinkle on the side and one of the slots was wider than the other. The bullets had been impacting the top of the through bore; we measured it at .432, so that's something like .003 of clearance depending on how you size your bullets. He sent it back and it returned with a new comp at .442 with the same feeling recoil reduction.
