A couple of thoughts:

1. I may be in the minority on this, but I stop viewing something as a 'handgun' when it becomes problematic to shoot it standing, off hand.

2. That group, at that distance, is impressive with any hand-fired firearm, of any type.

To get that kind of group, at that distance takes tons of money, time, skill, and dedication, regardless of how you want to classify the firearm.

The only group I shot anywhere close to that came with a 105MM cannon, at the same range.:D

I figured out how to solve the firearm classification discussion: We start a new category on THR called Handguns: Rifles and make this a sticky. :)

That's a Hell of a lot better than I could with anything at that range.

But I don't consider that to be a handgun (designed to be capable of being fired effectively while standing and using one hand).

I have to agree. Better shootin' than I could ever hope for. It is a very unique and quality firearm and I'm sure you have much time and monies making it and your groups what they are. I do not mean for this to be derogatory, I understand it's just a classification for the competition........but, as far as that rig bein' a handgun, IMHO, it's kinda like NASCAR calling their machines "Stock" cars.

Congrats, you accomplished what you set out to do, that is a victory, have fun with it now.

Hey, it was funny!
Specialty Handguns set up for pure bench shooting, is not practical for anything else but bench.
I like center-grips for hunting the best myself, but they still do not fit in the traditional picture of a handgun.

Thanks for posting. Good shooting, no doubt. It's apparent that is a good shooting pistol and you can shoot it. Also amazing what the short magnums are capable of,too.

That is a sweet gun, and even sweeter shootin'! When I saw "1000 yards", I thought it was a typo for sure, haha.

What's the reason for building this into a handgun, rather than a rifle?

With a rifle I can get the precision and accuracy I need to shoot deer at 500 yards, but things fall apart at 600 yards. I am working on this.

The OP handgun getting such a small group at 1000 yards seems like magic to me.

xphunter What is your set-up?

I spend a few days before hunting starts shooting at 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, and 600 yards with a cardboard target I put up in a hill.

I started doing it with a Pre 64 M70 with Pac Nor 270 barrel.
Then I was using a Ruger #1 in 7mmRemMag.

VZ247mmRM.jpg

Last year I was using a rifle I built:
A) Brazilian 7mm Mauser VZ24 action
B) Lothar Walther CM 1300 taper 7mm 26" Barrel blank weights 3 pounds 5 ounces = 53 ounces finished
C) Standard 7mmRemMag reamer, .45" drill, .47" boring bar in 4 step chambering
D) High Tech Specialties [Bansner] 20 ounce stock
E) Weaver #45 and #46 steel matte scope mounts
F) Limbsaver large recoil pad untrimmed
G) Oxpho Blue Cold Blue
H) TIG welded bolt handle, and bolt handle extension.
I) PAWS Aluminum bottom metal for Mausers weighs 3.5 ounces
J) Rear hump of trigger ground down and reduced trigger spring installed
K) Feed lips milled .51" Wide and 3.5" long
L) Bolt face opened to .532" with carbide tools on lathe and mill
M) Extractor claw relieved
N) Wooden plug epoxied into hollow cut off stock butt
O) Headspaced to .215", not SAAMI .220"
P) 3.25" wide sticky stretchy Vero Vennini strap
Q) Kahles Helica 3x10x50 scope with multi zero turret, not an IOR, Sightron, or Nightforce.
R) $12 Allen buttstock pouch, not the Eagle Industries Shooter's Stock Pack [cheek pad] that is $50 & back ordered. Either cover the reveal of that huge untrimmed recoil pad.
S) 9"-13" Harris swivel bipod, not the 5-9" Atlas bipod that is back ordered
T) vero vellini standard wide top rifle sling, not the Comfort Stretch Firearm Slings
U) Weaver quad lock 1" scope rings
V) Devcon steel putty epoxy under 1" of barrel, behind recoil lug, below tang, above bottom metal, under scope mounts.
W) Loctite 242 blue on scope mount threads
X) Rust-Oleum camouflage paint 1919 deep forest green on stock
Y) Doggone good 2"x3"x4" field bag
Z) Original Mauser safety, not the Wisner M70 type I should have taken.

9 pounds without ammo.

I squirmed around on my belly for hours. I had a:
Leica 1600 rangefinder
Kestrel wind meter
Garmin GPS
ballistics table from Quicktarget

Explain your field rest when you are practicing and what kind of groups can you consistently shoot at 100 yards?

S) 9"-13" Harris swivel bipod in the front

Y) Doggone good 2"x3"x4" field bag in the rear

Typically .75" 3 shot groups at 100 yards, which is as good as I ever average with 7mmRM rifles what are light enough to hunt.
My marksmanship never gets below .45" 5 shots at 100 yards, even with varmint rifles, and typically averages .6" 5 shot groups with my best varmint rifles.

Clark,
Are your groups at 600 spread out more horizontally?
Or do you have shot that are low right or low left of center?

Exactly.
Sounds like your form is good or you would be having other issues with your groups.
Consider three wind zones: 1st 1/3rd, last 1/3rd, and the middle 1/3rd.
Your Kestrel only reads wind at your position.
Really begin to focus on mirage and on foliage.
Angle of wind(s) is important. You can easily have multiple wind speeds and directions when shooting distance.
Think of the topography of the land as a river bed and air movement as water-It helps me visualizes things better anyway.
the 1st 1/3 and the last 1/3 are my two most important dopes with the middle being last.

Call it whatever you want, that's still some dang fine shooting. 1 MOA at 1,000 yards is roughly ten inches. To come in under four with any kind of firearm is an achievement.

Is a handgun like that my cup of tea? No, but rifles that are capable of it are right up my alley. I just appreciate the skill and effort requred to do it with anything.
