I don't see anything to apologize about. Looks like you did a nice job. I'm not much into military style rifles but I think it looks good.

Wow, this post generated more interest than I thought it would! Here are some answers to your questions. And thanks a lot for the nice comments.

Just curious... with the scope on there, can you still load the gun using stripper clips?

Sadly no. But owing to 922r that actually doesn't matter. Read futher down for an explanation on this!

tell me about the brake.
And where did you go for your scope mount and pod

Well for the muzzle brake I went to http://www.ricksmuzzlebrakesandgunstuff.com/ his prices are dirt cheap, his service it top notch and the product speaks for itself the moment you open the package.

A word on the brake is needed here. You absolutely MUST silver solder the brake to the barrel according to the ATF. They take a dim view of threaded barrels without something permanently attached to the threads. When I soldered mine on it ruined the finish on the brake, that was not a big deal since I was going the Duracoat route anyway. So plan on refinishing the brake if you want the gun to stay legal.

For the scope mount and bipod I went http://www.combatstocks.com/ I also got the stock here as well. They were also fast shippers. I recommend them highly.

Oh boy... the empty cases eject way, way harder when you fire it as opposed to when you hand eject them. Almost vertical and only slightly forward/right. They go about 15-20 feet up, too.

Again, this remains to be seen. I have watched my friend shoot this rifle several times and the brass consistently comes out at the 2 o'clock position. A trip to range will let me know really fast if this arrangement is going to work or not though! I'll update as soon as I find out.

I hate to bring it up, but what about 922r?

SIGarmed, you got me there. If my American made detachable magazine had shown up yesterday then I would have met the "10 or less" rule. It didn't however and I was so darned excited after applying the Duracoat that I just had to take pics and share! Hopefully by this weekend I will have the mag in hand and will be able to safely head to the range. For those that want an explanation on all this and how to stay legal while modifying an SKS according to the ATF then go here: http://www.victorinc.com/SKS-FAQ.html#_Toc98250440 It is admittedly pretty dry reading but will help you stay on the right side of the law.

KaceCoyote and SpookyPistolero, Thank you both for the excellent explanation of the scope! The manual is entirely in Russian and the only Russian word I know is "vodka".

PS- Where'd you get the scope? Is it a 4x?
Sweeeeeeeet! Where did you get the scope?

It is a 4X, seemed like plenty of zoom for the old SKS! I picked it up from http://www.kalinkaoptics.com/cgi-bin/kowstore.cgi They have more kick butt optics there than you can shake a stick at! Makes me drool every time I go to that site.

I don't normally like style of stock, but that does look good to me. Nice job.

Thanks! I have never been a big fan of this style of stock either until I bought one. It really fits nicely to me while the rifle is on the bipod. For $50.00 it was money well spent.

Those SKSs are fun aren't they? Wish I still had mine.

Dollar for dollar I don't think there is a better value in firearms right now. Cheap ammo, cheap rifle, relatively accurate, and reliable to boot. Yeah, I would say ther are very fun!

Anyway, that has got to be the coolest SKS I have seen yet. You did a fine job.

Thank you so much! It is a great compliment to have other shooters tell me they like it. I was afraid I would get a buch of flak for modifying a classic!

With that style of stock, you'll have to remove the action from the stock to do a proper cleaning.

Unfortuantely yes, the action does need to come out to get the reciever cover off. But I am the type that does a very thorough cleaning after every shooting session and my SKS's always come out of the stock anyway. So no big deal really. :)

The "capitalist" is only 5 foot 6 in Soviet scopes.

Heh, that made me laugh. :D

went from hum drum to pretty snazzy. Good job.

Thanks Smurfslayer! I thought she looked pretty snazzy as well.

You should head up to Statesville. A buddy of mine shoots there and he tells me that it goes to 600yds.

I shoot at Charlotte Rifle & Pistol Club, where we have a 300yds rifle range

Hey nbkky71, I had tried to join the Charlotte Rifle and Pistol Club via their online application. I waited two months and never heard a thing. Then after I bought a membership at Shooter's Express they e-mailed the next day saying they were having an orientation the next weekend!!!! Doh! How far away is the range in Statesville? I don't know my way around the state very well right now. Still a new guy, haha!

How do you load it? It looks like the scope would get in the way.

Well if I was to keep the factory 10 round internal magazine I would have to load one round at a time through the action. Not a big deal but the detachable magazine will make things easier.

Good grief! That is the longest post I have ever written! Took me almost an hour. Thanks again for all the nice words!

EDIT: I just saw two more responses right now! Thanks thatguy and Sewerman.

I liked the "before" picture better!

Good job though, if that floats your boat. It's more "custom" than "bubba", as someone else said.

Million dollar question though, is how does it shoot? Any better than before?

I have an SKS-M, that's very similar

with the same stock...have considered painting stock, but haven't got to it yet, that looks really good. My (more ordinary) scope is very short, and is mounted back further...You WILL need a brass deflector, I wouldn't want to hurt that cool scope....

I have 8 sks's, all in original shape. I would'nt even consider touching them. I would however, get another one and try to make it like yours. That is one cool piece. You really did a great job on that one. Probably the best I've seen. Great work.

always get a kick out of SKS (or glock, etc) 'purists', but thats alright, see my sig

Mostof us dont have a problem when the stock is mismatched, cracked, fubar'd or missing.

I think what really bothers people is when someone takes a rifle with all the original matching parts and a stock in near perfect condition and then mess it up. I dont have any guns like that so I guess I dont have much to worry about.

nice job though. looks like it needs a camo pattern though...

My only critique is that you should have gone with the Choate Dragunov instead of the ATI. The ATI, IMO, is ugly and way, way too heavy for its size.

However, you did a fantastic job on the rifle, and the whole package looks good. :)

Choate Dragunov:

I don't think I could do that to my unissued Yugo M59/66, I'll leave it stock. But I have to admit that I'm tempted to pick up a less than perfect rack rifle and do the same thing. What's the story on the detachable magazines? Are they converted AK mags, uncoverted AK mags with a magwell insert, or something else?

That ain't a Bubba gun.

Trust me. I rebuilt this previously-thrashed Norinco to win a one-MOA SKS bet:

you can cut the back off for easy cover removal

It's a solid part, which I sawed off on mine. I also trimmed the front part level, by removing the top three ovals on each side.
Makes one line all the way across the gun. Nice work you did.

Another big +1 for the Choate Drag-style stock over the ATI garbage. Better made and the pistol grip setup is infinitely better w/ it's split design (the pistol grip is two parts, the forward part is screwed to the back half covering up the release for the trigger group and positioning the grip in the right place for much better trigger reach)... You can also remove the dust cover for basic field stripping w/o any trouble.

Slightly pricey at $70-$80 last I saw one though. Had one on my Chinese SKS that I ended up selling to my father, nicest SKS stock I've seen...

I was actually tempted to pick up a rack quality model M59/66, put on a Choate Dragunov stock, scope mount, and remove the bayonet to mount a folding bipod; but after reading the SKS FAQ I'm so confused I can't figure out how to do it. It seems that the C&R status makes it illegal to do so, or is that not the case?

Gewehr98,

You wouldn't happen to have a parts list laying around for that SKS would you? I've been interested in building something similar ever since I saw that pic.

Chris

Very nice SKS you have there. They are amazing guns. The funniest thing is 10 years ago we all went boar hunting and one guy had a Chinese SKS and another guy had a Mini-30. The guy with the SKS bagged a boar on that trip while the guy with the Mini-30 didn't get anything....he never heard the end of it....D:neener:

Update!

***UPDATE***!!!!

Today was finally the big day, a trip to the range!

She really performed amazingly great! While it was on an indoor range there were three of us there and were all able to put multiple rounds through the SAME hole at 25 yards. One of the shooters today was only 12 years old and he was able to perform same hole shots with ease!

Now I am dying to get out to an outdoor range and see what she can do at 100 yards plus. While I thought the gun was pretty darn accurate for a milsurp with iron sights before, I am astounded by what I saw today. Long distance shooting should be really interesting. :)

Here's a few items of interest:

1. None of the 200+ empties ever contacted the scope. While some had said it would be a problem it simply didn't happen.

2. The muzzle brake makes this thing LOUD!!!! I mean really, really loud. While standing behind the others shooting her I was amazed at the tremendous backblast and felt concussion I was getting from the old 7.62X39! Very cool.

3. The ATI stock functions great and is superbly comfortable. I am unsure why there is so much negativity against it compared to the Choate.

4. The Duracoat did scratch off of the reciever cover when I opened and then closed the latch. Maybe it isn't as scratch resisitant as I had thought? No other problems, just metal on metal seemed to be a bad thing. No surprise there really I guess.

Finally I have to say again that the SKS has got to be THE best bargain in firearms right now. They are just so much fun for so few dollars I don't see how they can be beat!

To all of you considering an SKS, do it! You won't regret it a bit.
