My Camo M14-DMR

Bought a Norinco M305(M14 clone) a couple of weeks ago.Wanted to do a rifle up similar to the one Sgt. Randy Shugart used in Somalia.

So far I have installed the reciever in a desert cammed US GI fiberglass stock, swapped in a Springfield Armory bolt.Wiating for a one piece custon Stainless Steel NM recoil spring guide to be made up for me.Rifle has a Springfield 3rd Generation mount, with a Tasco PDP-5 red dot sight(Will be replaced with an Aimpoint Comp when funds allow).

I've got something similar in mind for my new FAL...
(Of course, I realize it could be considered blasphemy, mentioning the FAL in a post about a rifle obviously in tribute of Sgt. Randy Shugart, but I hope you understand I mean no disrespect )

I paint all my rifles myself. It's a blast doing it, and it feels good afterwards when it turns out looking good.

Looks good; how did you prep the stock before painting?

There was a previous thread about a stock refinish and the poster used something called 'self-etching primer' that sounded pretty caustic.

I have a synthetic M14 stock I need to refinish and I was thinking of a desert camo.

The selector cut out on the stock was already filled in with JB Weld, but I smoothed it over with some glazing putty.I then lightly sanded the entire, being careful around the checked hand grip areas.After sanding, I went over the stock with a Scotchbright pad.After cleaning all the dust off of the stock, I cleaned it with Acetone, then wiped it down with Isoprohyl Alcohol.When I did the final cleaning with the Acetone and Alcohol, I wore surgical gloves so I wouldn't get any greasy finger prints on the stock.I taped off the front barrel band and sling swivel, and cut out two pieces of cardboard to fit in the top and bottom of the receiver opening.I hung the stock by inserting a clothes hanger through the bottom cleaning kit compartment in the rear of the stock.The end of the clothes hanger poked out were the rear sling mount goes into the stock, so I took some needlenose pliers and bent the end enough so that it didn't pull out of the stock.

I used grey fiberglass primer(the red primer shows through too much if you happen to chip the finish).I did 5 coats of primer and let it cure for 12 hours.Did the same for the base coat of Khaki.After the base coat dried, I used cut out templates form the camo pattern.I held them away from the stock so I got a fuzzy edge on the pattern(I didn't want sharp edges on the pattern).

After the pattern was dry, the Khaki base coat looked a little too bright, so a gave the entire stock a light spary of brown to make it look dirty.

The colors used were:

Krylon Camo System Paint in Khaki(base coat), Brown, and Krylon red primer(both for the pattern).

I let the paint cure for week before shooting.I did this with one of my bolt guns and the finish seems to be really durable.

Skullboy- excellent, that's exactly what I needed to know. When you did the 5 base coats of primer, was it 12 hours between coats?

The 12 hours was the drying time from the last coat.I waited 30 minutes between primer coats.Did the same for the base coat.I didn't mention it, but use the same methods for the handguard. I can e-mail you more pics if you want to see the rest of the pattern on the other side, and a couple more close ups.

Last question I promise. How far away did you hold your camo templates from the surface of the stock?

I'm taking the next week off as I'm about to transfer to a new department. I'm not "going" anywhere, I'm just going to spend the week doing things day to day that I never get to do...

One of those things I plan to do next week (based in large part on these encouraging results) is to camo the new furniture on my FAL...

Heck, if I mess it up, I was gonna spend $55 to have it done anyway...

I'm going to try either 3 or 4 color woodland. But as I mentioned to Redlg the other day, if I were going to camo my rifle in a pattern that might actually come in handy in a "real world" situation, I'd have to go with either blue cordoroy (for shooting behind the couch) or tan/grey/brown spotted Berber (for going prone in the living room)
