The rotating barrel isn't that kewl. It just adds another piece during disassembly - a piece that needs to be lubed, no less. And it messes with the twist rate.

I appreciate all your guys info and insight.

There are no ranges that will let me rent to try out a gun, If there is...It's probably far as heck anyways. I know it would be better to drive out there anyways and do it rather than to spend the 300-400 bucks and end up not liking it.

Well, We all went to the LGS today and he looked at a couple of .40 cal handguns. Tried a Berreta PX4, Glock 22 Gen 4, XD and XD-m.

What do you think he ended up buying?

The Glock 22. This is the reason you should just go to the LGS and see and fondle and do. I had to ask him....

Uhh, What happen to the hammer and manual safety thing? Lol I only asked him just for kicks I guess you can say. Just wanted to know what he was thinking.

He just said he likes Glocks reputation and it just felt good to him. That was enough for me. If he doesn't like it, Like someone said, He can always sell it afterwards.

He ended up getting the Glock 22 with a box, Paper work, The spent shell casing, The extra backstraps, and also a total of 3 magazines as well as a lock. He paid $475 for it.

All the other guns he was looking at were about $400 to begin with even some used ones. So he said what the heck and went with it.

Good to hear he made a (surprising) choice. Glocks are a great value and he should have no problems with it.

I got rid of my 40's and went 45 and 9. 3 0f one and 2 of the other. My friend did the opposite, it's a matter of personell preference. I just never liked the feel of the 40. There are so many loads now, the difference is more mental than anything.

I have no problem with the .380, 9mm, .40 or .45 debate I have 'em all. My personal favorite for range shooting is a Taurus .40 740 Slim. Compact but easy on the hands and accurate. Good carry gun in cooler weather too.

Those are pretty much the exact same specs I started out with when I went shopping for a modern auto.

I wanted a .40
I wanted a SA/DA gun with an external hammer
I wanted a manual safety as well as decocker (although for a gun like the SIG P229 it was not a must)
$400 was not my limit though. I bought a FNP 40 with all o the above for $550. I really wanted a P229, but they were hovering around the $800 range and I may get one later in life. (I think my LGS is maybe a little high, their new Glocks start at $535, but the exact model of FNP I bought lists for $2 more on Bud's website).

I don't regret any of it....I am glad it is SA/DA, I am glad it has a manual safety, and even though it is mostly a range gun, I have no regrets about it being a .40 S&W, I already have a P38 in 9mm and a 1911 in .45 and I will eventually get more 9mm.

Although I am a reloader...I pick up brass at my range...an I see far more .40 than I see .45 and it is probably a wash between 9mm and .40 S&W, so I would say the .40 is still going strong.

I picked up about 4 boxes worth of Brass (free)....so that is free brass, then I bought 1000 180 grain rounded flat nose plated bullets from Berry's for $125. Bought W231 powder for about $20 a pound, and CCI small pistol primers for $35 for 1000.

$0.125 per bullet
$0.035 per primer
$0.014 per a 5 grain powder load to a cartridge.

Thats $0.174 per a cartridge and $8.70 per a box. That might be $1.50-$2.20 more per a box than if I was loading 9mm.
