I was truly disappointed when I saw caimans in Costa Rica. I thought I was looking at youngster 4 foot one when several hatchlings climbed up around 'mama'. It looked like 'baby' gators that I catch on floating Rapalas when bass fishing.
I don't know if they were black caimans but they were black. The croc I saw was much more respectable .. about 11 feet.
