Well, like most handgun shooters it's only a matter of time before you set your sights on your first centerfire rifle. Sure, I own a couple of 22's (a Ruger 10/22 and a Sig 522) but I felt it was time to go down the "more effective" road.
I had been spending some time looking at "black rifles," and have a lot of friends who swear by them, but there's something about them I just couldn't wrap my brain around. Not sure what that was, but even though I had the cash, I never really got one. Even when everyone was fearing the AR ban would come again.
I guess while I do own, and like, my autoloaders - especially my HK USP and my Kimber 1911, I always come back to revolvers. Preference I guess. Maybe I just like wood and steel too much. Dunno.
Local gun shop had a used Win 94 (looked like an 80's version without safety) and I really thought about getting it, but it was pretty worn and loose. Then today I walk in and they have a much newer yet used (almost mint, except for a few small rust spots on the receiver) version of the same model (with crossbolt safety). Probably one of the last 94AE's to come off the line (has a 93xxxxx serial number). Felt tight. The LGS owner let me shoot a few rounds of 30-30 through it on the range, and boy did I like the boom. This is a serious piece!
Other than a bit of frustration figuring out how to load a nearly-new 94 (use next round to push last round in technique works) the rifle just feels so handy. So after a bit of negotiation, I walked out the door for a few bucks over $350. I think I did pretty good as brand-new Rossi rifles go for more, but you can let me know if I'm right to pat myself on the back. It's no AR, but for the same price as a cheap AK I have a true American classic IMHO.
Picked up a few boxes each of Remington SP and Hornady Leverevolution and will be heading back to the range to try it out some more later this week.
Anyway, a few pictures for you.
