me and my wife have an agreement that i can have one expensive gun a year, which that dosen't leave much that we consider inexpensive. Living on a military budget ain't easy and it definetly ain't the best pay in the world but we make do! So i am having trouble deciding. If i can only have one. What should it be?It has to be great and keep me excited until next year. I would say $500-$650 is the limit.

What I would like! My list to choose from!

1)S&W model 637 with crimson trace grips from the factory!
2)Another xd but this one in .45 acp, but in the 3" model when it arrives
3)The Ruger P-345 but in 9mm if they ever decide to do that!
4)Taurus PT145
5)A Sig maybe a p229
6)Any other recommendations? And we can go a head and say no to Glock.
*Disclaimer* :) I think the glocks are fine weapons but they do not fit me, the way that the xd does. If that fit me i would have a few of them! I am not trying to offend or start a war!

Thanks ahead!

Greeting's possum My Friend-

First things first, my thanks for your service to our great nation as its
much appreciated~!:D

IMHO, the SIGARMS P229 in any caliber is a mighty fine weapon and
very hard too beat. Plus, I believe that it will keep you excited until the
next year~!:uhoh: :)

Phased plasma rifle in the 40-Watt range.

Ok, seriously. I'm in the same boat. 1 good one per year. If I didn't have a nice slightly used ruger GP-100 en route, I'd be hoarding my cash for the XD-45 ACP tactical. Pity they don't have a .22lr conversion for XDs. I totally agree on the better feel to the XD, I shot a g19 once, and between the weird feeling it had during firing and the horribly stiff mags, I just plain didn't care for it. However, my XD-9 is a joy to shoot hundreds of rds in. As for suggestions... How about a nice m1-carbine? Or even a semi Vector Uzi carbine in 45 ACP?

I am I think with my friend Dan here - re the SIG 229.

Might also consider going a bit larger if 9mm, .40 or .357 SIG of interest - instance 228 or even 226.

637 is nice - and with CT's a great small revo - my son has one.

But - back to SIG - I think you would be one very happy camper with one :)

Check out CDNN and see if you can find a nice trade-in - could save you enough to get more mag's ;)

If you can carry I would say the 637 or more to the point a 638 since it is a gun you can carry anywhere with no muss no fuss and in a real caliber not to mention the stone reliable gun.

If civillian carry is not an option go with the SIG. It is a spectacular gun, comes with SIG snob appeal at no extra cost :D and really makes a great do it all pistol (carry, HD, etc.)

Did I mention it is a SIG. Sorry SIG geek checking in. :neener:

I would also like to thank you for taking the time and risk to give my lazy fat rear the freedoms it has. Believe it or not some of us actually notice and if you happen to need a few bucks to put you over the top of a gun YOU really want....just drop me a PM.

Chris

Well...

For that Budget - BUY TWO!

Since it is on your list - you can get BOTH the PT-145 and his Very Apt Little Brother the PT-111 for less than the $650.00 limit...

Great Guns, Great Shooters, and you get a Matched Set!

What more could you ask for?

Good luck in your qwest... Enjoy the hunt!

thank you all for your responses, i am leaning heavy toward the sig! but here is my problem. i have never really studied the sig made pistols.I know very little. How is the DAK, system which i believe is the model without the decoker right? Would ya'll recommend that or a model with the de-cocker? Help me out if you can! i would appreciate it very much!

thank you all as well for the support. As the conflict draws out more and more people often lose sight and forget, but It motivates me so much to know that you guys are behind us all the way! Thanks again!
By no means am i complaining about the pay i don't do it for that at all! I love my country and the citizens of it! You guys are awesome, and i want you all to know that it is a honor and privalege(sp?) to serve people like those on this forum across the country! have a good one!

Opinions and preferences (obviously) vary but I would say, go for and stick with DA/SA decocker, even if you were a 1911 con' #1 person. I am not knocking DAK - just haven't gone that route!

My three SIGs 226, 228 (both 9mm - but availabe also as .40/.357SIG according to barrel choice) - and the 220 (.45acp) - are all same manual of arms.

I find the SIG DA more ''friendly'' than some, instance the Ruger and with practice need not be any problem IMO - and so, carry con #2 is a breeze and very safe. There is no safety per se - it ain't needed. The decocking action employs a dead reliable hammer block mechanism - which also is interposed under hammer with decocked carry - so even a drop will not give a risk.

ONLY ONE GUN PER YEAR?????? Well, the SIG's are really fine firearms. How 'bout getting a SIG (maybe a 229!) in .40 S&W AND a .357 SIG barrel? Uses the same recoil spring and mags and there you go! ONLY ONE GUN but two calibers! Twin fun!

As a sheer fun pistol, I'd go with a Sig P226 in 9mm. Cheap ammo, great to shoot, very accurate, and lots of great deals (check out the CPO - certified pre owned pistols).

If the P226 is too large for your hands, go with the P229. That's probably going to be my next pistol (I have the full size and the 'personal', now just need the compact :p).

I would also lean to the Sig 229.

I have two of them. I have the DA/SA and the DAK. Many people swear by the DAK, but I personally dislike it. I have never had a problem with the DA/SA transition, and I really don't care for the DAK trigger. I love the DA/SA, and that is what I am going to stick with from now on.

It really comes down to personal preference. Both iterations of the trigger are flawless, so you have to pick which one you like better.

GO OUT AND SHOOT BOTH. I loved the DAK trigger when I was dry firing before I bought the gun, as it is smooth as silk. After I bought it though and got to the range, I discovered that I simply did not shoot well with it. I love the gun, but I am MUCH better with the DA/SA.

I add my thanks for your service.

I have a similar budget, but can't stand just buying one gun a year, so I do several things. Buy used. I never expect to buy a new Sig or S&W. Sig CPO has already been mentioned.

Since at least one Ruger was on your list, I would recommed the KP90 in 45. They are affordable new but I got mine used and I have a lot of fun outshooting my buddy with his fancy 1911.

I too would like to see Ruger make a single stack 9, but I really like my P95. If you want to consider existing single stack 9's, take a look at the Kahr. But like some other premium guns, I don't like the price, so I have bought my Kahrs used.

Another pistol to consider is the FN Hi Powers that are really good deals right now. I got one in 40 cal. (NIB w/ 3 mags, total $430) that I am thinking about buying a 357 Sig. barrel for.

If you like the HP at all, I would strongly recommend that one be on the top of the list, because once the FNs are gone, HPs with the Browning name will be at least $200 more. poppy

personell choice

for me i think the sig or the taurus and mabey a 22 converson kit for plinking this keeps the cost of shooting down so that meens more money saved for the next gun you want.
i have shot sig's a number of times and love it in 45 acp though i dont own one though one day i hope to. as well as i prefer a 45 over 9mm for stopping power.
taurus may be "clone" guns but i find thier work to be verry high quality and in a few cases even better than the gun there patterned after. i own two taurus guns one an auto pt 92 and a 9 shot mod94 in 22 lr for plinking and enjoy both.
i also enjoy shooting my 92 berreta and prefer the feel of the taurus in my hand but perfer the barrets due to the decock in it.
for my ccw wepon i use a 1911 in 45 for stopping power.

I am really into the da/sa sig and buying one used will probally be the answer, the money i save can buy ammo or better yet a .357 sig barrel! Thanks for all the responses and great advice! My only problaem is that out here where I am staioned there ain't a gun shop with a sig for about a 50 mile radius. My dad used to have one and I shot it as a kid, but that was so long ago. And a gun rental place is unheard of unless you go to topeka, so I am gonna have to get lucky and find one somewhere and see how they feel! I know they are accurate, durable, and dependable, and great all around, and that is a what I need!

First things first, im glad to see that I'm not the only one on that boat....my wife and I Have the same agreement...I would say fo with the sig dude, seen it felt it shot it and dissasembled it and love it...as for me the beretta cx4 storm is next on the list...

I have the Sig 229 in .40 and it is truly a great gun, one of my absolute favorites. As for the others on your list, XD 45 interests me but if I were you I would wait until next year to see how the XD 45 performs and then get it if you are still interested. The Sig 229 has been around for some time and has earned a stellar reputation.

What firearm to purchase

Purchase 3 of 4 of the Swiss K-31 rifles. When the supply dries up, the price will go up steadily. I purchased several Swedish Mausers a few years ago. At the time I was paying $55-$85 a rifle. One of the Model 38s is now going for about the same price as I had for the entire batch of Swedish Mausers. At some future date sell 2 or 3 to upgrade your collection.

1 Gun a year

I agree with the Sig 229 40 S&W or 357 Sig. Also check the factory reconditioned models. They sell for much less than a new one and are warranteed for 1 year I believe. Good luck!

www.cdnninvestments.com police trade in Sigs and trade in Smith & Wessons. The Smiths are hard to beat, shorter trigger reset than the Sigs both are great guns. I also have a Mil Pro PT145 and like it for the fire power and ease of carry. For a full size the Taurus 24/7 Pro looks good, DA/SA. Look for a dealer or pawn shop that will order for you at 10% over cost. If you have a Rod and Gun on post check with them about ordering for you.
