Weather was nice enough today to get to the shooting range. So I took my Walmart Mini-14 out for its first dance. I put a Leupold Vari-X II 3 X 9 X 40 scope on it. The ammo used was Wolf 55 grain FMJ and HP. It took about 10 shots to get the scope semi-zeroed. I sight in scopes in an unconventional manner. I just sit at the shooting table with my elbows on the shooting table and shoot at small rocks at the end of the range. I just keep adjusting the scope until the rocks start splitting. After getting it sighted in I noticed someone had left several clay pigeons on the berm behind the 100 yard line. They were laying at an angle to my line of sight so they offered a more challenging target. I was able to bust three clays pigeons with four shots. I was impressed !!! Distance was about 105 yards. Needless to say I am impressed with my $604 Walmart Mini......:D No failures of any kind either.

FMJMIKE my experience with the new Rugers is the same as yours. I have two new 580 series guns and no complaints with the way they shoot. I have two guns for the price of one an Ar-15. I would not trade my two for an Ar either.

Maybe the older minis wouldn't shoot that well but the new ones sure do.

My experience with a new 580-series mini is very positive. These are accurate rifles. The new factory tooling has really improved the firearm.

Now, along with simple tool-free stripping/cleaning, outstanding reliability (dirty or clean), extremely rugged construction, and a handy/light package, we get an accurate rifle as well.

I've owned ARs and AKs and the new 580 mini takes some of the best of both rifles without some of the shortcomings. Fans for other platforms may argue the point, and an AR or AK may have advantages in certain situations, but the new mini is a more capable all-around firearm.

Ruger got this one right. ;)

My newest with tapered barrel throughs brass about 10-12 feet.

Ruger has been selling 20 round mags for $30 now for several months.

I have one ruger 20 and 7-8 Pro-Mags and they are very close in construction. Plus I have never had a single bobble out of the PM magazines. They sell for about $20 from Academy Sports.
