I just picked up a used (but beautiful) S&W 686 today for $300. The owner couldn't tell me anything about the gun except who sold it to him.

The following marks were found inside the frame:
ACK4076
MOD. 686

On the crane,
A3
S
2334X

Age????

This revo is the pre-safety lock generation with a hammer-mounted firing pin. Incidentally -- is it alright to dry-fire a revo w/ the hammer-mounted pin?

Thanks all,
Rich

YES You can dry fire it, I do with my 586 all of the time

It is a 686 with no dash number and no M on the crane, due a search for 686 and recall find the info for the firing pin bushing recall, Not a problem with today loads and primers but in the 89s some LEO got hurt because their firearm locked up on them
S&W does the upgrade free including shipping.

If this is a range gun shoot it and have fun, if it will be a HD gun check into it.
