Name This 30 Cal Bullet

Pulled a boatload of these boat tails from 30.06 handloads from a friend of a friend. I do not have a scale handy. Can anybody ID what model bullet they are? OAL 1.250-inch. I think they are heavier than 150g - will not know for sure for a couple days. Based on its construction I am thinking its a Sierra Gameking.

I believe that bullet is a 168 gr Sierra MatchKing with pull marks at the tip. It looks identical to the bullet I use in my NM M1A.

Not a Match King, at least none I have ever seen that had a cannelure and no HP as shown. The cannelure and amount of full diameter shank behind the cannelure looks a lot like a Hornady, but not sure about how the ogive profiles jive, and the taper and length of the BT looks like a heavier bullet, and a lot like some I saw in the army... Knowing the weight will be helpful, also curious what their diameter is?

Diameter is about 0.310. All my other 30 cal bullets are .308 on the nose...

Hmm, seems my curiosity and hunch had merit;... .310"... I'm gonna stick with my Hornady call, but this time 174 grain FMJ-BT, sized .310", as shown here:

Seems your friend for whatever reason, right or wrong, likes to stuff his 06 cases with .310" diameter bullets.

BBDartCA - can you ask your friend to ask his friend why he is using oversized bullets in an 06?

Deffinitly not a Game King, and possibly a Match King. To determine a .30 cal. bullet make and type on visual inspection is no more than a guessing game. I mean considering that there is no other caliber of bullet on the planet with as many makes and types as the .308 projectile, many that are so simular in detail, that only the manufacturer would be capable of getting close to a deffinitive I.D..

"...Deffinitly(SIC) not a Game King..." Sierra does make a 150 grain FMJBT Gameking with a cannelure. Isn't .310" though.
Hornady's .3105" FMJ is 174 grains and is made for .303 British or 7.62 x 54R. So your buddy's buddy was using the wrong diameter bullet for .30-06.

I run the SMK's in both 168 and 175 for the 308. The is most diffidently not a SMK. It could be a 150gr GameKing. Looks very similar.

Wrong bullets - that explains it all. After I pulled the bullets, a new bullet would just fall though the cartridge - seemed oversized. When resizing the brass, it took more force than usual to do the necks.

Why on earth would somebody run a 0.310" dia bullet in a 30/06, besides ignorance? I suppose this can be murder on a barrel if you could even get it to chamber.

Wow. How not to reload for an '06.

One reason I wrote "Seems your friend for whatever reason, right or wrong, likes to stuff his 06 cases with .310" diameter bullets", was because without knowing for certain, perhaps this 31/06 ammo was loaded for a rechambered Arisaka 7.7. Easy to get cheap cases, .311" or so groove diameter original barrel (if you get lucky) made for a gun that was shot, rather than collect dust.

Also was thinking perhaps the person had a "fat" barrel, or one worn out, and the larger diameter bullets over the defacto .308" fit the bill... I hate to jump to conclusions (not saying anyone did), but again, perhaps the person who made the ammo had no idea what they were doing?
