Going to get a 243 for varmits.

Heard lots about the Savage as being very accurate out of the box.
But I cannot find one around Frederick MD.

Did find a Rem 700.

How accurate is the Rem 700?

Cost is a big factor.

Thx

You will not go wrong with the Remington 700, if you want to start an argument ask which is better, the Savage or Remington, and you will get a ton of responses.

Why do you want a .243? Deer also? Why not a .223? That's what I'd get if its just for varmints. Ammo is cheaper and you can shoot more with the .223.

I have a Rem 700 in 7mm-08 and its pretty accurate, like 1-1.5 MOA with Rem 100gr Corelokts.

Savages have a good reputation for accuracy. I don't own one, however, but if/when I get a bolt specifically for varmints, Savage will definitely be on the short list.

Oh, you should be able to find anything you want online and have it shipped to a local FFL, so if you know what you want, shop online. Buds gun shop, ableammo.com, gunbroker are good places to look.

How accurate is the Rem 700?

It will be as accurate as you are. The 700 has been used by the military and SWAT teams for years as their sniper rifle (or at least what they start with when they make one)

I would also agree that 243 is likely a bit of overkill for most "varmints". 223 will get the job done nicely and leave more $ in your pocket, ammo wise.

Personally, I would get an Browning A-Bolt, they are cheaper than many Remington or Savage rifles, have a smoother action (in my opinion), and the accuracy difference is not that significant for a hunting rifle.

The Savage is an awesome rifle for what you will pay around here in VA & MD. Get one with the new Accustock. They have a listing of models with that stock on their site (it's new, so not all models have them).

The 700 is nice, but they need trigger work (at least the 10 or so I tried before buying a Savage). You may want to look at Sako and Tikka too.

The nice thing about the 700 is the ability to modify it. For instance you can buy the finest trigger available for a rifle and install it in 15 minutes. Parts and gunsmiths who know how to accurize 700's are plentiful. What kind of varmints are you hunting? I'd go 223 or 22-250 unless you are a coyote/deer kinda guy. The 243 is way overkill for prairie dogs and alike.

Go to a Local gun shop and get your hands on some product. Ruger, Savage, Remington & Browning all make good guns...and don't forget the Tikka, good gun great value. See what fits you better. The 243 gives a little room for larger game...however the 223 is a better buy in bulk ammo. Side note I bought my first Tikka and the thing shoots great. Good Luck.

He's not asking about whether or not to get a .243! Yes it is a great all-purpose round. Savages are great, model 700's are great. In fact, the most accurate rifle I ever owned was a 22-250 varmint model 700. All it had was trigger work. Whatever, this is worth, hope it helps. Good luck!

My varmint rifle is a H&R Handi-Rifle. I bought it in .243, but am waiting for the introduction (H&R said it will be 'soon') of the .17 Fireball barrel. My shooting buddy has a .223 & .45/70. The ability to get new caliber barrels fitted for $130.00 or so is a major plus for a low-buck multi-purpose rifle. They're pretty accurate, too.

I have a Remmy 700 BDL in 22-250. Very accurate gun with about 2000 rounds down it. I tuned the trigger myself, it's a very easy process. 243 is a great round, don't let anyone else tell you different.

Personally, I don't care for the model 700 SPS versions, but that's just my opinion.

The remington is likely to have a better fit and finish, the savage is likely to shoot a little better. For varmints accuracy usually wins.

Note: the remington may have more potential to shoot awesome, In my experience few come that way from the factory. If you might want to fix it up later get the remington.

Both are good rifles. A 243 will kill varmints dead just like a 223 or 22-250 or 204 or 308 or 30-06 or 300 win mag.
