why doesn't anyone mention the Winchester model 70?
I bet U find a nice used one in 223rem or 22-250 within your price range.

Wasn't the model 70 discontinued and licensed under FN and is now the FN PBR and FN SPR?

Yep, the M-70s are still there, just made in SC. They are virtually identical to the SPR series but that is beside the point. I did notice that they removed the M-70 Stealth in .223Rem., hope I am wrong but it appears that it was cancelled.

I see Economical, then I see Quality, then I think Oxymoron.

Savage of your choice should be a qualifier. I have some (ugly) that are nearly 50 years old, and they shoot 1' from bench. Have a couple with current triggers that do a lot better.

My 'quality' guns are a lot prettier, cost 10 times as much, and shoot 5% better.

.223 rem is gonna be a lot more econimical to shoot but if your heart is set on .308. . .

Then get set up to reload...
