Need advice for an economical Bolt Action Rifle

Remington SPS. As for 338 lap, if you have a budget then that's not your round.

Stevens 200,Marlin XS7 and if I could sell a BAR in 7 MM I would pick up a T/C Venture in 7 MM. Have a 700 TAC .308. 2 MOA at best and still a work in progress.

I really like my Savage Model 10 .308 with Bushnell elite 3200 scope. The gun was $397 with a cheap bushnell scope. I replaced it with the elite 3200.

I've done some research on the remington700 SPS and the rem700Police rifles and the SPS seems like a great value but on the other hand I like the 700police rifles for the fact that they have nicer stocks and heavy.barrels. I also like the 700SPS tactical, the only thing I don't like is the 20in barrel. Ideally I would like a 700police in .308 w/ 24in heavy barrel and the hogue overmold stock, does remington make a version with the 24in heavy barrel and houge overmold stock. Also I heard that the hogue overmold stock touches the barrel and could effect the acuracy of the rifle, something to do with the bipod pushing up on something.

Hey, what about the Savage EDGE? It's featured on the cover of July 2010's Guns & Ammo, and gets a pretty decent review, save for the 5-pound trigger. It doesn't come with an Accutrigger nor is it available with a walnut stock. The article sent me scurrying to Bud's website, where I found for $268.00 ... delivered! The EDGE XP w/ scope, .270, delivered, is $294.00.

I'm not in the market for another rifle right now, but there's something about an inexpensive yet accurate rifle that I find ... appealing.

I picked up one of the cheap mossberg bolt action 3006s for a cheap truck gun. I got it for 250 out the door. It absoultely amazed me at the range. Many loads went under an inch at a 100 yards. I wish some of my rugers and winchesters shot that well. Hell of a gun for the money.

DustyVermonter, just buy SPS Varmint, and if you like Hogue stock on SPS Tactical you can always add it, by the way its Hogue stock is only pillar beded and stock itself cost 100 bucks, for 200 bucks you can get Hogue stock with aluminum bedding block. For my SPS Varmint I purchased B&C Medalist A2 Tactical stock with aluminum bedding block. There are many choices if you decide to go with Rem 700, Savage also has variety of things you can add, Tikka is problematic you buy it and don't mess with it. Another warning if you decide to go with SPS Varmint, its factory stock would require you to do few modifications, since it is not free-floating the barrel actually rest at the end of the forearm, so you can mess with it and get it free-floating or just get another stock...

Dang it! See what y'all have done? Now I'm droppin' hints to the wife about my "need" for another rifle. Thanks, guys! :D

I have a Savage 10fp and I can attest to the accuacy of this rifle. In fact it is the most accurate rifle I've ever owned, and the price was very reasonable. I did add a Timney trigger and that's it.

well, savage stevens and marlin, maybe even mossberg top my list of cheap decent bolt guns, (tikka being the next one I buy) walmart remington 700's and used guns are always options. so I'll throw out some different stuff:

from the cdnn catalog

remington 798 (mauser) $400
$600 steyr
$350 smith i-bolt
$600 weatherby vanguard
$500 browning abolt 2 in some short mags.

add maybe $50 for shipping and FFL

Well, now its kind of a toss up. I really was leaning toward the Rem700SPS but I did find a few things that I didn't like about it, now I'm lookin pretty closely at the Savage 10 FCP. What are the pros and cons to both? Is the savage more or less customizable? I also heard the bolts on the rem700's are prone to breakage in cold weather and I live up north in vermont and its freezing temp more than half the year. so Remington 700 SPS or Savage 10FCP Which one and why?

The Savage 10 FP is the same gun as the FCP but with a different stock. It also has the accu trigger. It'll be at the top of your price range but you'll be happy. They SHOOT!

Somebody suggested a Mosin.
Can you scope a low-priced Yugo 48A (8mm) Mauser without altering it?
Two weeks after buying mine last winter, a guy told me that the previous owner killed a Missouri deer at 200 yards with the iron sights.

The rifle prices are modest and surplus ammo about .25/rd. Turkish 8mm is reportedly hotter than the rest (lots on "GB").
The newer commercial ammo might not have the power that you want for longer distance hunting.

Maybe also a Lee Enfield #4? Prvi P. ammo is $.60/round.

DustyVermonter I assume you talking about 10 FCP-K with AccuStock and muzzle break? Not sure if you need one people at the range will avoid seating next to you ;-) Yes Savage's a very much the same as far as custom parts, there are tons of add-ons for them, if you go with accustock I see little need for a new stock but you can get them starting from Choate, B&C, HS, McMillan the list is big. Just a reminder Savage uses 1:10 twist on their 308 vs Remington 1:12, which means Savage likes heavier bullets 168 - 180 grains then Remington likes 150 - 168 grains

I can speak from experience on the S&W i-bolt because I own one in .30-06. Not a better buy to be had. It will easily equal or outperform my high $$ Kimber or Weatherby with one exception--it ain't eye candy. But it's the rifle I go to for most of my hunting needs, while the others are home warm and cozy in the safe. The i-bolt kind of reminds me of a homely woman; but one who can cook, clean house, and have your bath water ready on time. (Oops! Am I allowed to say that?)

if you have an academy sports close by they have their remington 700's for $349.00 Mine had them in 243, 25-06, 30-06, and 7mm Mag

I don't know where you get that a Weatherby Vanguard would cost $600.00, I bought both of mine for less than $359.00 within the last year and saw them for $379.00 a couple days ago in a local store. I couldn't be more pleased with mine. Put on decent glass for around $250.00 and you have $629.00 with glass. That leaves $371.00 for ammo if your budget is $1000.00.

Mikey!

I'm a lil bit disapointed that the Savage likes the heavy lead. I stock up 147gr for my M1A scout. Not really even sure if that's something to consider in this instance but ammunition interchangeability is a legitimate concern of mine. Certainly don't intend to shoot 180gr through my scout, I've got my stock pretty much narrowed down to 7.62nato(.308),7.62x39, and 5.56nato(.223) for my CF rifles. Same with my handguns, I stock 9mm and .45 for full size holster carry and .38 and .380 for concealed carry. I don't really want to have 63 different types of ammo to stock up on but I guess stockin up on a couple types of loads for the same caliber won't be too bad if it means bein able to go with my gut instinct which is tellin me to get the Savage 10FP w/ 24"heavybarrel. Still not completely sold on it. I wish I had the oppurtunity to shoot both the R700 and the Sav.10fp and go from there but I'm pretty much takin a shot in the dark. Not too familiar w/ bolt guns in any case so I don't know what seperates the good from bad, just gonna have to research and go based off what I heard from folks. Anyway, Thanks

Cheap Rifle

I vote for the Stevens 200.I have one in .223 they use 1-10 twist bl's even in 22-250,so you can use up to 70 gr vld's.I load 25 gr Varget and 65 gr game king for less than 1in @ 100yds.I also have 4.5-14 Nikon scope as much as rifle.
