Right now I have a CMMG M4 style lower that needs to marry a nice upper. Plan to just plink at the range and maybe for a SHTF scenario like zombies or something. =) No plans for competition shooting in the near future... unless ammunition prices miraculously drop.

Basically, I need to know which manufacturers are considered:

- high-quality manufacturers
- mid-quality manufacturers
- low-quality manufacturers

For those that don't want to give explanations, I'll attach a poll.

Thanks for the help!

if you want it anytime soon, it's less a question of quality and more a question of "what's in stock?" cause the answer is "not much"

M4carbine.net has a nice chart that breaks down the specific features you want for a fighting rifle, and what the top brands have. If you aren't too worried about all that, CMMG makes a nice upper (I have one of their 16" M4 uppers). It has a lot of the mil-spec features, and mine has run perfectly from the get go with no failures. And it will probably match your lower pretty nicely. :)

well, high end on your list is noveske followed by LMT. Oly has a really spotty record, avoid just in case. But really, it is "which one is in stock", most of these will do.

Noveske is one rugged machine...They are combat ready and tested...

Colt too, but for value a great upper is the RRA bull barrels (plus they have many size options in 2" increments from 24" down to 14"(and smaller)

18" is very uncommon. It's a nice compromise between a tactical 16" and longer 20" and RRA is one of the very limited companies manufacturing this barrel size.

Thats my $0.02

All the Koolaid drinkers will tell you go go with Noveske, LMT, or colt. Colt may not work with a CMMG lower due to the pins being slightly different on colt receivers. Someone who knows more about this than me will have to chime in.

I have a CMMG upper and lower and have been completely satisfied so far. I've not run 10k rounds through it so we'll see how it holds up in the long run. You have to decide if the extras such as MPI tested and shot peened bolt, 4150 steel barrels etc. are worth it to you for a plinker/home defense rifle.

If you run your guns hard, shoot 5k rounds a year, and your life depends on it, I'd get the extras. If you want a good reliable, average use rifle, the less expensive options should hold up very well. I did some research and CMMG had all the options I felt were important and a price point I could live with. Your mileage may vary as they say.

Why post if you don't know? You're wrong, on many levels.

My vote for uppers, price no object, would go

Noveske
BCM
LMT
Charles Daly

One of the nice things about buying a barreled upper is that you get to choose the BCG. Stick with full-auto BCGs from Bravo Company (BCM) and LMT.

I assembled this rifle for $1600 optics, sling, BUIS, etc. all in. With a couple of slightly different parts choices it could get closer to $1400 complete.

Wrong about what? The colt pins? I said I wasn't sure about that. My point in the post was, do your research and choose what best fits what you want to do with the upper.

You yourself recommended 2 of the three brands I mentioned. It's just that Noveske, LMT, and Colt are the standard answer for the AR15 commandos. If you just went by that you'd should be buying a great rifle, but it may be more than you really need. My point was, do your research and compare cost/features. Its that so wrong?

I only mentioned the colt point since I read it is something to consider on some of their models, but admit I had no first hand knowledge.

oh lord, the charts been posted.

buy what you can afford
and use the rest of the $$ for ammo and mags
