So I recently save about $800 and I'm looking to purchase a new rifle. I'm more of a casual shooter. I shoot a couple times a month at most and its mainly at targets or any random stuff I find to shoot at. I really only shoot for the fun of it; so cheap ammo would be nice.

However I'm also looking for something that might be a good SHTF rifle as well (never know what could happen), so something at least somewhat practical as well. I'm a big fan of smaller rifles.

So right now I'm considering three generic rifles but if you have any other suggestions please share.

-Vector Arms Uzi carbine (http://www.atlanticfirearms.com/storeproduct517.aspx)
-Some type of Ak under folder (maybe: http://www.atlanticfirearms.com/storeproduct917.aspx)
-DPMS Ar-15 (http://www.dpmsinc.com/store/products/?prod=1437&cat=1891)

In your opinion what would be the better investment based upon my needs/wants?

Do you have any target rifles, since you said you like to shoot at targets?

I'm assuming you don't have a SHTF gun, since you said you would like one.

If I were you, I would get the AR since you could use it as both a target gun, shooting 'cheap' ammo, and would be a SHTF gun if needed

Based on what you stated, the AR. A carbine in a pistol caliber, without a carbine in a rifle caliber, is next to useless, IMO. Most people hate underfolding stocks on AKs due to uncomfortable, or impossible, cheek weld; i.e. worse than normal accuracy.

That said, there are a lot better ARs to be had that would be very near to your budget. One thing that you haven't taken into consideration for any of those is the cost of ammo, magazines, case, poss. optics, sling, cleaning kit, etc. Keep all of those in mind; you could be looking at another $800!

Well...

Though I have on loan, I want my own AR. Just what I want is a plain jane Colt AR...

I also want a single shot .22 rimfire. But...But, I made the wonderful mistake of shooting a .17 HMR and for farm duty, pur-dee fun and practically a .17 makes a LOT of sense for my needs.

I should have never picked up that Savage at the gun shop...I gots a serious case of wants for that Savage in .17 HMR...

I am worth it...

i'd go with a AR-15, i realy like DPMS's target barrels they shoot nice groups, not sure i'd go with DPMS for a shtf rifle because i don't think they offer a carbine with a chrome lined bore and chamber (a must for a shtf rifle) now if i'm wrong and they offer a chrome lined model i say a DPMS shtf rifle will be just fine. now there are allot of AR manufacturers out there. so if you find one with a chrome lined bore and chamber just post on here and ask every one's opinion on the rifle. i think Stag makes an AR with a CL barrel that would be in ur price range also BCM (my personal favorite...BCM makes fine AR's)

I guess loosely using the term "target shoot". I go to a friends house in a unincorporated area and we print out targets to plink at. Again, as unorthodox as it may sound, I shoot mainly for the shear enjoyment of the loud boom and opportunity to destroy things :p

SHTF capabilities are really not too high on the list. I have a good amount of firearms in my house. I meant something that can actually serve a purpose if it had to. To put it more plainly... Something more useful than a Draco AK pistol, haha.

Well I was simply going to SBR the Uzi and get a 10in barrel. Mainly because I simply adore Uzi's. I fell in love ever since I handled one.

I'm a fan of simply plain Jane Ar-15's. I prefer simple firearms, less full of crap the better for me.

Shameless Sales Pitch to Follow

It is my opinion that the casual shooter can be entertained and educated by shooting a pistol caliber carbine. The ammunition is (still) less expensive than rifle ammunition, thus allowing more opportunity for practice.

As a manufacturer of said products, I wish to recommend the Thureon Defense carbine.

Loosely based around the AR-15, the design is simple and straightforward, easily understood by shooters with a minimum of experience. Ergonomically similar to the AR-15, time spent with the Thureon Defense carbines will translate directly into familiarity with the bigger cousin.

The purchase price will stay well within your budget, and trips to the shooting range will also be within your budget, particularly if you shoot the available 9mm version. Reliability is essential in a self-defense firearm, and this product is built to perform under the worst conditions. Additional information can be obtained at www.mycarbine.com

The Uzi would be fun. But I think the fun would wear off rather quickly. I'd have to go for the AK.

Go to Toy-R-Us, walk up and down isles, find something that catches your fancy, walk to the Cashier, pay for said item, and leave....

I'm really liking the look of the Stag Arms Model 2, with a .22 kit for cheap shooting. Chrome lined barrel is a nice touch too.

I think my decision has been made. I haven't really heard any negative stories about Stag Arms either, so I'm confident its a good purchase.

Haha Shadow, I was actually 'Toys-R-Us' this past weekend.
